PAGE THKKHJ Society and Clubs Edited by Eoa Nealon Hamilton Publlo Attention Focused On Music Beginning May 6 While ther will be no formal cele bration of National Music Week, be ginning May 8, In Medford thla year, extensive plans are being made to focus attention on that beloved art lor the cultivation of a greater ap preciation and enjoyment of muslfi. All music teachers of the city nre cooperating In such a plan and the public Is asked to give all the time possible to music. The many pro grams held at Easter time, the music festival today and tomorrow in Ash land, and the spring concert of the Gleemen, promised for the early fu ture, have made it impossible to pre pare formal programs In particular celebration of the dates chosen for music week. The programs planned, regardless of the dates, It is believed, will consti tute a fine observance of the week In the truer sense of its creation. Members of Writers League Enjoy Session The southern Oregon branch of the League of Western Writers met Satur day at the Hotel Holland for a pleas ant program. A story by Mrs. Olive May Cook was presented for criticism and Mrs. G. R. Satchwell read a poem, written by her sister. The next regular meeting will be held the second Saturday in May. Each member of the league Is asked to Invito a guest to the social even ing to be enjoyed Friday at the home or Mrs. Satchwell. Music Loven Enjoy Ayres' Concert A number of Medford music-minded folk enjoyed two concerts, played by Harold Ayres, University of Oregon student pianist, yasterday, having mo tored to Ashland for his morning con cert at the Southern Oregon Normal school, which preceded his Med'ord appearance at the Baldwin recital hall. In the group attending the Ashland program were: Mrs. John White, Mrs. E. E. Gore, Mrs. Walter Mundy, Mre. Rawles Moore and Misses Joyce Ban ish, Margery Paley and Dorothy Gore. Following the concert here, which won more than enthusiastic applause from a mixed audience of musicians, critics and students, an Informal re ception was held for the talented pupil of Louis Artau. Mrs. Rawles Moore and Mrs. B. E. Gore were host esses for the occasion. Assisting about the rooms were Misses Grace Jo Bur nett, Dorothy Gore, Constance Moore and Frances DUlard. General Joseph Lane Society to Entertain D. A. B. General Joseph Lane society. Chil dren of the American Revolution, will entertain members of the Daugh ters of the American Revolution and friends at a benefit tea In the wom en's club rooms of the city hall on Saturday afternoon. April 38, at 3 o'clock. An Interesting musical pro gram Is being prepared for the occa sion. The hostess committee is composed of Misses Elizabeth and Jean G tilings, Florence Gilford, Jean Piatt, Barbara Holt, Mary Louise McElhose and tela i Henderson. I The members of the society will ; meet before the tea to transact im portant business, beginning at 2 o'clock. Officers will be elected at , the business session. Mrs. Spencer Hostess At Lovely Bridge Party. Mrs. Ralph Spencer was hostess yesterday at her home on Newtown street at 1 o'clock luncheon and con tract bridge. Ruhl. who has been guest here for the past week of his son, Robert W. Ruhl and family In Siski you Heights, Is leaving thla evening by train for Seattle. Following a short visit there with friends he will continue to his home In Rock ford, 111. Mr. Ruhl came to Medford after spending the winter In southern Cali fornia. Mrs. Childress, Guest At Weed Home Here Mrs. Clara Childress of Orleans, Nebraska, is a guest in Medford this week of her cousin. Mrs. Eber Weed, and plans to remain for a fortnight. This is Mrs. Childress' first trip to southern Oregon and she is enthusi astic in her praise of the valley. (AP) Three punch less erstwhile regulars of the Washington Senators were sched uled to take their baseball on the base In today's game with the Boston Red Sox. Weakness at bat brought Third Baseman Osle Bluege, Second Sacker Buddy Myers and Right Fielder Johnny Stone out of the lineup in favor, respectively, of Cecil Travis, Bob Boken and Dave Harris. CONCERT POSTER El In connection witti the concert of sacred music, arranged for the bene fit of the Salvation Army, a poster contest waa conducted by the art class of the Junior high school, ten fine posters being made. Those tak ing part were: Dorothy Qale. Rum Barton, Elowrene Bates, Margaret Mc Dowell, Louisa Cowden. Mary Lou Mann, Robert Wilson, Helen MurdoeX. Betty Armstrong and Lois Llttrell. The posters were Judged by the art department of the Senior high school and first place was given to Louisa Cowden; second place to Betty Arm strong, and third place to Dorothy dale, while the poster of Helen Mur dock received honorable mention.
