A Mother Anguished
County Coroner Frank Perl and
state police officers, called to the .
West Phoenix district to Investigate
the fire, were, of the opinion late
Friday that the flames had been
started by the older children, play- ,
ing with matches during their moth
er's absence.
Before leaving for the mall, Mrs.
Everhard stated, she had Instructed
the children to stay outside the
house. She was returning from the
mall box when she discovered the .
flames. She hurried to the scene, but
was too late to gain entrance to the
house. The two little girlo outside
had no explanation to give, other
than that they were playing, when
they heard the roar of flames and
ran from the building. They did not
know what had become of their baby
sister.
The kitchen, In which the little
body was found under the stove,
which bad melted to the ground, had
no outside exit. The only door lead
into another room. Officers believed
that the baby, terrified by the heat
of the flames, had crawled under '
the stove in an effort to escape.
The house was but 26 feet by 33 '
feet In size and was divided Into "
three rooms.
Mrs, Everhard, beforo calling offi
cers, summoned her husband front
the 4dl orchard, where he was em
ployed several miles distant,
O. E. McGrath and Bernard Mc
Grath, neighbors, rushed to the
ranch, tipon discovering the flames, .
but arrived too late to rescue child
or household effects.
Fire Origin Unknown
Although no other origin of the
fire could be determined by officers.
xne two actio Everhard girls denied
that they had been playing with
matches, when questioned by offi
cers. And the mother stated that the
matches had always been kept where
thoy were believed beyond their
reach.
The grief stricken family came to
Medford Friday night and received
clothes and relief bedding from the
wju viuctB. x noy wcn jiousea or un
night at the Rainbow auto camp
ground, then continued back to the
orchard one and one-half miles west
of Phoenix yesterday to pitch their
tent and begin again.
The Everhards are wett known In
the valley, where (hoy have resided
for many years, although they had
made their hom a.t PHrwnl frtr-htife'
three months.
The sympathy of the entire com
munity was extended to them yes
terday and It la believed the public
will be generous In a response to
aid them in acquiring the material
things they need.
