PAGE SEVEN PLANS Red Letter Day Next Sunday For Free Methodists Sunday is expected to be a red let ter, day m the history of the local Free Methodist church, at Tenth and Ivy street. In the morning at 11 o'clock. Evangelist McKay o( Green ville, 111., who is directing the revival campaign, will use for his subject, "Is the Holy Ghost Leaving the Gen tile Race?" He will also at thAt time answer the following questions: Is the Gen tile ago closing? What Is the stn against the Holy Ghost? and What will be the final battle fought before Christ returns? In the aftornon at 3:30, a great mass meeting wilt be held. The evan gelist will give his life story, "Prom Dakota plains to Evangelistic Field." In the evening at 7:30. the subject will be, "Where Are the Dead?" Rev. McKay states that tens of thousands have heard these message over America. The public is invited to come car'.y to Insure a good seat. Subject tonight will be, "Where Is Judas?" There will be services Saturday night. SmalleM Hru Truck. WELLESLEY, Mass. (UP) The smallest fire engine ever to bo regis tered In Massachusetts was con structed by Lieut. George Johnson and three other firemen. The tiny truck, built of discarded motor parts, carries 350 feet of hose, pumps 268 gallons of wtiler a minute, and cost only (40 to assemble. Smyrna Plans Lottery. SMYRNA (UP) Owing to a drop in taxes paid to the municipality of Smyrna, the authorities have decided to replenish the city treasury by a municipal lottery. Building sites, houses and gardens will be among the prizes in the lottery. OF Nine Women First Subjects in Carefully Planned Pro gram Which May Em brace 3000 by Year's End MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 1934. NORMAN, Okla., April 20. (DP) On testimony that the welfare of society and the subjects themselves would be promoted by sterilization, eugenic operation was ordered today for nine wards of the state of Okla homa. All were women of various Insane types. The order marked the beginning of a. long and carefully planned official program for sterilization of mentally unfit persons and habitual criminals, one of the most comprehensive pro grams of its kind ever undertaken by any American state. Three thousand or more state wards, according to officials, may be sterilized before the end of the year. 'All of those for whom the opera tion was ordered today were describ ed as sufferers from incurable men tal afflictions and potential parents of children of similar mental state. The oroers came In .hearings before the state board of affairs, meeting at central Btate hospital for mental dis eases. N. The patients sat uncomprehending as Dr. D. W. Griffin, hospital super intendent, described them as Imbe ciles, epileptic or Insane In other ways, and stated they were soon to be discharged from the Institution. The superintendent and Dr. J. L. Day, of the asylum staff, told the board that none of the patients had a mental age of more than ten years. In each case It was established that the patient could not be cured aud would be likely to produce off spring of similar mental condition. (UP) A nation-wide drive was under way - today to stamp out incompetence and crooked practices in the Home Owners' Loan corporation, with sev eral cases pending in the department of justice for possible prosecution of employes, according to officials. Several cases centered about diffi culties which caused removal of six state directors. Discussing possible additional res lgnatlons from high places, HOLO officials emphasized that many dif ficulties caused by incompetence were handled by administrative investiga tion rather than through legal pro cedure. Where criminal liability is Indicated, Investigations are begun by federal agents. State directors have been changed In Illinois, New Jersey, Maine, Penn sylvania, Kansas and California. Patronage matters complicate many cases, It was said, and yet the corpo ration described Its Ohio office as "highly efficient" under direction of Henry Brunner, whose appointment was bitterly opposed because he was Democratic state chairman. Ohio has lent $84,000,000 of the corporation's total national outlay of about t500, 000.000. Other officials with Import ant political connections have func tioned exceptionally well, It was said, because of previous business experi ence. The HOLC also has about 40 to AO cases In 30 different states awaiting federal prosecution, In which outside lawyers and bankers are accused of preying on home owners by charging fees ranging from $10 to $250 to ob tain loans. A few such violations were said to have been proved and mild penalties assessed. The law provides a maxl mum $10,000 fine or a five-year pris on sentence. Some cases Involve col' luslon with HOLC appraisal officers and both parties are under Investi gation, It was said. BOSTON ( UP ) The historic Ed ward Everett House, In Charlestown where General Lafayette and Daniel Webster were entertained, has been put on the real estate market.
