ALL TIME ?
WINNIPEG, April 7. (AP) A
gold rush, In the best traditions of
the old days, but with methods and
conveyances undreamed of by the
sturdy '49ers, la on in western Can
ada. From the tip of the Yukon to the
Ontario-Manitoba boundary line min
ing camps teem with activity as pic
turesque "pick and shovel" men fol
low close upon disappearing snows
to search and stake claims.
From Island lake, whose extreme
arm crosses from Manitoba Into
northwestern Ontario to the McLeod
river district of northern Alberta,
gold discoveries, It is believed, may
be linked up to give Canada a glac
ier gold mining zone, extending over
100.000 acres.
Regarded as one of the most Im
portant finds in the wide arc of ex
ploration, the re-dlscovery of the lost
McLeod mine, in the mysterious Na
hann! country of the northwest ter
ritories, holds hope for many.
Claims have been staked for miles
along the shore line of the creek,
called the ."back door to the Yukon."
Old mining settlements in the Car
ibou country in British Columbia
which, in the 90's, buzzed with activ
ity and then faded into obscurity
when gold gave out, are swarming
with prospectors.
ENTITY OF BIT
OF BONE PUZZLE
F
PORTLAND, Ore., April 7. (AP)
Sheriff H. L. Hoss of Coo county
was here today seeking to identify
a bone which may be from a man's
left arm or a bear's left hind leg.
Foul play was suspected when the
bone was found In a large stove in
a shack where William Ballejv 60,
lived before disappearing February 0,
Sheriff Hoss said.
Dr, O. Larsell of the University of
Oregon medical school said the bone
probably was the wrist end of a left
radius bone, probably from a human
being. Dr. Larsell said some abnor
mal markings on the bone might
have resulted from an old injury.
' Sheriff Hoss was looking for Bia
ley's sons, Maynard and Shirley, who
formerly lived here. Relatives might
have knowledge of some Injury to
Bailey's arm whleft might lead to
identification.
"The only other possibility that we
know of is that the bone came from
the left hind leg of a bear," the sher
iff said.
