T COUNTY $2682 IN Jfecfcson county oorU for th care of dependents, not at the poor farm or in federal relief activities, for the month of March will be 93,682, ac cording to the county court and clerk's office. The sum li distributed m follows: Regular Indigents ........$..162 Widows' pension 881 Old age penelon ................ 839 A number of transfers from the regular Indigent and widows' pension lists to the old age pension list were made. The amount is a substantial re ductlon from a year ap. The old age pension law Is expected to eventually abolish the poor houses of the state and the Indigent list. With prospects of Increased labor the coming summer and fall, It Is anticipated that the regular indigent list will be reduced further. To date 79 old age pension certifi cates have been issued by the county court, out of approximately 360 ap plicants originally filed. A number of applications have been rejected, because the applicant waa not 70 years of age, had not lived In the state 10 years, or had kin willing or able to care for them. A few appli cants ware rejected because they had Income-paying property, The county court held a session today to consider further applications, Jackson county Is one of the few counties In the state paying old age pensions. In Marlon county with 600 applicants no payments will be made until April. A majority of the counties are stlU working out ways and means to pay It, CASE NEAR CLOSE Closing arguments were underway fn circuit court this morning in the .damage suit of Anne Turpln of Klamath Falls, against ths Southern Pacific railroad. She seeks $36,000 for alleged injuries received at crossing near Mt. Hebron, Cal., when the auto In which she was riding was alt by a passenger' train. A Jury of 10 men and two women baa been, hearing testimony in the action the past week. The plaintiff contends the Southern Pacific was negligent in not blowing the whistle or ringing a bell for the crowing, and traveling at excessive speed. The defense contends that Mrs, Turpln was guilty of contributory negligence, and that the train was operated on an established safety basis. Evidence In the case showed that Mrs. Turpln was "hitch-hiking" from Oakland, Cal,, to Klamath Falls, and was Invited to ride by J. 0. OHne and Jack McNerny, truck operators, near Woodland, Gal., OUne and MoNerny were dismissed as defendants by a non-suit. ERA LEADERS AT Alfred S. V. Carpenter and Victor Tengwald of the Civil Works Ad ministration and Miss Lillian Roberts, secretary to ths Jackson County Red Cross, attended the meeting In Eugene last week-end. at which de tails of the new relief program, to be carried out under the state emergency relief administration, were discussed. The new program will become ef fective early In April and a statement regarding its operation here will be released In the immediate future. CALIFORNIA MOVES NORTHI IRE RAIN DUE FOR VALLEY IS Good news for the Rogue River val ley came this morning with the lsau lng of the following forecast by the United States weather bureau for Med ford and vicinity: "Increasing cloudiness, followed by rain late to night or Tuesday. Slightly warmer tonight." As the seasonal deficiency, figured from September 1, 1033, Is still 0.78 Inches, additional moisture is needed In order to assure success of the crops. The deficiency, according to the weather bureau, In the, precipita tion for the month of March, Is 1.11 inches. Since September 1, there has been 7.33 Inches of rainfall, .30 of an Inch falling Saturday. PORTLAND, March 20. (AP) Portland's long period of sunny wea ther was broken by clouds today and the weather bureau predicted rain late tonight or tomorrow. The city has had no rain of conse quence In three weeks. Many real dents have found it necessary to sprinkle lawns, and early truck gar dens and farm crops are said to be In need of moisture. Taylor was appointed last summer by Governor Meier to flit the vacancy In this county, and served at the special session. A. E. He is known as conservative and sound thinker, well acquainted with the needs and Interests of this county. He Is a Re publican of long standing. For many year he was Justice of the peace for the Medford district. One of his studies ha been the school system, and Its perpetuation. Like Brockway, he eupported the sohool relief tax bill In the special session of the legislature. Democrat of the county have an nounced they will put a full county ticket In the field. Moore Hamilton, leader of the local -'Young Demo crats", and Leon B. Hasklns, have been urged to run for state senator on the Democratic ticket. Senator George W, Dunn of Ash land, and Victor Bursell of Central Point, both farmers, are the Republi can entrants to date for the post. Filings for the primary close a week from tomorrow, April 3. There were reports that the final days would see a rush, Including "another hatful of candidates for sheriff." To date, Walter J. Olnucheld and Clatous McOredie, chief oi police of this city have filed on the Republican ticket, and Bid I Brown, Robert A. Bell and E. G. Narregon on the Democra tic ticket. Public1 Interest has so far been light In candidates, but with keen concern over the school relief sales tax.
