PAGE TEN MEDFORD MAIL TRTBUNE, BEDFORD, OREGON, TUESDAY, MARCH 13. 1934. Judith Lane bg JB.iWH BOWMAX SYNOPSIS: Judith Lane'e friend, the newspaper girl Clta Sanfort, just hae called to eay ehe must in terview Judith at the "perfect etc - nourapher." Waiting to loin Clta. Judith recalle the kimlneee of her employer. "Big Tom" Uevlne. who htte watched over her etnce the death of her engineer father. She , iuet hat taken a letter lro.n Big Tom to hie attorney, Iforton Lam pere. whtch eaid that Big Tom planned to becin eonetructton on an abandoned dam project in wett ern Texae. through the failure of which many email farmer' had ' rttined. Chapter Two NORMAN DALE JUDITH'S stenographic training, her practical and technical knowledge of engineering and the trust Tom Bevlns wai able to place In the daughter of a lite-lcng friend, made her Invaluable to blra. At Brat the work aeemed to her Ilka a compromise between engi neering and business domesticity and then gradually she became more the stenographer and less the engineer. And as she caught up the loose ends of dally work and wove them Into the pattern of the con struction company's business, her respect for the "office wives" of the world deepens! until It verged on pride In a profession. The moon-faced clock brought Judith to the realization she was due to meet C1U In Ave minutes. how, due to traiBo lights, one-way thoroughfares, or perchance the In clination of the man at the wheel, Judith found them speeding across the arch of the bayou bridge with the queer town of little homes lying beyond In the dusk. On the crest of the arch, traffic caught and held them a fleeting mo ment. Judith looked down on the roofs of the little town "always're mlnds me of a library," she confided, "the roofs are like colored bindings of books turned upside down . think I'd like to live In one." "No," countered her companion, meshing gears, "You should live In a house with slim white plllara and a green roof, green abutters and window boxes with pink gerani ums." And then In the sheltered In timacy of a storm-assailed, coupe they talked of homes and houses. ' "I've never lived In a bouse," Ju dith confided, "It'c always been con struction camp shacks, tents, hotels, apartments and once, while Dad was building a bridge, I lived in a monastery, deserted of course." "It would have been deserted once the occupanta haU seen you," came tbe chivalrous response and Judith tilting her head forward to laugh, caught a glimpse of the clock on the dash board "please I must go back, I'm meeting Clla Banfnrd, and NICE PROFIT ON SALE OE L tlngly & Moore, $2.60 end tl-35; Paul Jones, 62.60 and ai 35; Four Rosea and Antique. 13 25 and 91.65; Ken tucky Triumph, 92 26 and 91. 15. Later during the day vouchers were also filed by the Van Landlngham company, O. 8. Hinsdale and Keltler Brothers and Baler, bringing the total liquor inventories to 913.864. Other expenditure vouchers of the liquor commission, totaling 93494 were filed today Including 9824 for Installation of fixtures and repair of buildings; freight service of 9S16: painting of signs, 9322; window clean ing and changes, 9223; agency signs 9180. She scurried to the locker, pulled the porky delft blue hat to a btnart angle, donned the Jacket of her new suit, whisked a powder-puff across her nose, a Up stick across her lips and grabbing letters to be droppod Into the mall chute darted out of the office to the elevator. The lettera slithered down the glass chute like one-winged pigeons, Judith beard the elevator doors clang open. She stepped briskly Into the car, then "Oh," she said breathlessly looking up Into laugh ing dark eyes which seemed amused at her start of surprise. "Working late, aren't you, Miss Lane?" asked Norman Dale, Junior partner of the firm to which she had just mailed a letter. "No," she countered, "Just using the office as a waiting room, I had late appointment." And under her breath words were singing , . . "the perky blue hat . . . the trim now ult ... let the rain ruin them, they've served their purpose. Nor man Dale baa seen mc as something other than a cog In the office ma chinery." "My car's Just outside and It's raining pitch-forks. May I take you wherever you're going?" THE! elevator had made swift descent to the lobby before Ju dith had recovered her breath suffi ciently to respond to Norman's In vitation. For two years she had been watching him across the width of the board room table: a barrier a definite as the social wall which seemed to rear Itself between aspir ing young stenographers and prom ising young lawyers. Dale, Lamporo and Morrison had been retained by the Covins Con struction company to handle Its le gal affairs since the Inception of the company, and Norman Dale, assum ing his father's place with the law firm, at the elder Dale's death, had gradually assumed his duties. Now that the roard table and Its symbolical harrier had been re moved, Judith found herself re sponding to Norman's Invitation with a still breathless "I'd so ap preciate It." The car was at the curb. The Rice wa four blocks beyond, but some- while she s always at least fifteen mlnutos late, It'a now twenty min utes after the tlro I w- du in 'et her." TRAFFIC was disappointingly light a they returned awlftly to the city, and Norman Dale, as sisting Judith to alight, asked If they couldn't resume the discussion soon. "I really don't know," Judith an awored, "We're leaving for the Rio Diablo basin June first and Dig Tom la quite liable to keep me working evenlnga to catch up with his other affairs before we go. Suppose you telophone me?" "I will, or else I'll see you at board meeting, or drop down for a chat while Tom's off ou one of his wlfe'a pink teas." Judith hurried Into the hotel lobby, discovered Clla hurrying In behind nor. and turned to accopt the rod haired girl's apologies. "As If you weren't late, too," pro tested Clla preceding her Into the main dining room, "and didn't I see you crawling nut of Norman Dale'a car?" "Unihum," admitted Judith as they were seated at a window table, "any objections?" "Plonty," retorted Clla with the frankness of an old school friend, "don't want you suffering from an gina pectoris or some other heart ailment." "What do you mean? Is thore anything wrong with Mr. Dale?" "No. That's the trouble. Ho's so completely all right every woman who ever sees him wants to takr him home for keeps." "Money?" Inquired Judith guile lessly. "Not much. Doesn't need It. Not thtt he's so heart breaklngly hand some, but he baa got a nice sort ot a he-man look about him. There's a lot ot millionaire mamaa of mar riageable daughters willing to make up the deficit If he'll only promise to lore, honor and cherish their off spring. How he's managed to reach the ripe old age of twenty-eight without exchanging his freedom for a franchise Is beyond my powers." (Copyrijht. tail, bvJeanre Bowman) Tomorrow, Clla and Judith oook UD a lory. t VALLEY VIEW ROAD Twenty-five residents of the Valley View section met rrlday evening at the Valley View achooi l.nuM and discussed new route to the Pacific highway, according to the Ashland Dally Tidings.
