PA'OE FJOTTT MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, BEDFORD, OREGON, SUNDAY, MARCH 11, 1934. BLOND i A IVw Serial Chapter 41 BIRD OF RESCUE THEIR story wai quickly told. The aettlnit aun found Grahama sprawled serosa the cockpit pencil ilng a note that rat to be sent from the neareat cab. office, j Within an hour or two. he hoped, idupllcatea of this message would be In Mybcrg'a office and al Spin Win- islow'a apartment In Hollywood, two i thousand airline mlleg away. Grahama gave the pilot parting Instructions. "It's hurry up that counts. This beach here Is about fifteen miles long. Good landing pot tor a land plane. "We'll be her at the northern end. Spin could land one of the big Lizzies on It It he can't get anything smaller and faster at short notice. Got going, now, and thanks." Greene said Importantly, "That's 1L Make It snappy. Vou make It snappy and some day I'll give you s write-up that will make your worst enemy proud to know you." The pilot grinned broadly. He said to Grahame: "What's this guy dol Own s newspaper!" 1 Frank chuckled. "He's a press agent." The man reached for his controls. "Oh, so that's It. Funny, be doesn't look crazy, but now I get It. So long. . . ." The roar of the motors drowned Greene'a Indignant expostulation. JN THE great square before the pyramid, the column of priests and guards began their slow march measured by flat drum beats vibrat ing through the steamy air. ! The up-borne litter of tbe high- priest led the procession. Tbe cage or the Jaguars war Immediately be hind it Sid by side, and blocked In by a stuare of -guards walked i Janice and Langton. Janice threw a beseeching glance 'at ner companion. "Billy," she whispered. "Is there any chance at all? Have you made any plan I , , ." Langton'a eyes were red-rlmmed. Obviously his nights had brought intra little sleep. His face was drawn with lines of Impotence and baffle- iment. He answered with a voice Ihusky with fatigue wavering with ieompasslon. ! "Afraid not, Janice. If Frank had gotten to tbe coast and It hadn't rainea mere might have been a faint chance, but" He mads a little gesture of de spair. A tenuous apathy settled upon Janice's mind. Objects about her became unsubstantial. Illusory as If she walked in a bait dream. vaguely ane remembered that It was said tbat drowning persons re newed their lives in one queer Il luminating flash before oblivion wallowed them. It was like tbat with her at this Instant. But It was not ber life that parad ed before tbe mirror of her memory, but the wsb of circumstances tbat had been spun sbout her since tbat drizzly night in Hollywood when Frank Grahame had forestalled her abduction by tbe mad priest of the Mayan Rain God and his emissary Don Raoul Ortega. A vicious plan, and a daring one surely to attempt with such an laborate scheme the luring ot a prominent and wealthy girl into bid den Jungle fastnesses Just so that she might nact the death role of the Daughter of Icb-KIn, the Sun God. What a sequence of feorror had this priest of a dead race re vived In his madness! TTOGARTH, her director, dead. McGrath. the advance man, murdered as were the two camera men. Greene and the boy Juan (one. Frank, too, was gone gone as surely from her Ufa as was Ortega wbo had lost his life on the pyramid top hy the hand of his master. In a little while she and Langton would Join them all. Janice brushed her wrist across her forehead. Her gesture could not sweep away the unreality. This was a dream; no. It was a part she waa playing on some realistically ap pointed studio set at home. She elt that It she listened in teutly she would be able to hear ths bum ot traffla on the streets beyond the lot comforting sounds, sounds that would assure her of the proximity ot civilization. There was a hum undoubtedly. The noise insistently overbore the Sat monotone of the altar drum. Perhaps It existed only In her mind or else It was the crowd murmur F AT NATIVE'S TABLE CAGUA8, Puerto Rlro, Mar. 10. (AP) Mrs. Franklin D. GODDESS by Herbert Jensen Ing as bits of Information were passed between Us individuals. She was aware that Langton was talking to her rapidly. Incoherent ly. She lifted her bead; ber eyes focused; from out ot that queer state ot unreality her mind began to function normally. Tbe litter supporting tbe high priest had been carried halfway up the pyramid's steeply slanting steps. The Jaguar cage was being slowly advanced up the slops. She stumbled a little as ber feet found tbe first step. Tbe hum, she realized was tangible. It was louder a deeply cadenced drone tbat was curiously familiar. Then quite suddenly she under stood l-angton's shouted words. "It's a plane! Janice, look up!" She glanced skyward. Her glance focused on a point above tbe east era Jungle almost In the eye of ths rising tun. She saw outspread sil ver wings; topai Hashed upon ths fore-shortened body. The dark lumps of the three radial motors were silhouetted sharply. It was approaching wltb amazing rapidity, slanting in a long power glide toward the pyramid. Above tbe growl of Its engines she , heard th . o I c e of the ahkln screaming to his guards. Sbe saw the body of the column spread out. The armed guards were racing in varlotu directions. They appeared like tiny pawns on a bugs chessboard. Some still ran; the nearer ones knelt, holding their rifles before them pointing at tbe approaching airplane. The rifles began to crack sharply. Suddenly tbe plane was over ths square. It zoomed and lifted. ' She saw a body hang out ot one of the ports, pointing something thai looked Ilk a rifle downward, yet was bulkier than a rifle. T ANOTON cried out hoarsely, -J "They have a machine gun! Why don't they shootT Don't they realize" Then In the next breath he shouted with despairing anxiety: "They cm'tl They don't dare. The ahkln knew! A fallen body In tbelr way would wreck a landing!" Tbe plane made a steep bank over the western buildings. Back It roared, tbe wbeels of the landing gear scant Inches above tbe heads of the soldiers staggered over the square. Langton made an Inarticulate sound. "God. what flylngl See. they scatter, but tbey close up again. Tbey'll never give way long enough to let the plane down. "Janlcel We must do somethlngl Make n break. See. there's an open space on tbe eastern side. It we could run tor It . . . divert the guards . . . ship can land " He pivoted on bis sound leg. There was a dull smack as tbe near er guard ot the six went down. Janice beard : scream from ths ahkln drowned by a riot of snarls of the Jaguars as tbe bearers of the caged dropped It. She felt the band of a guard rougbl) grasp her arm. She twisted away and flung her self at a man whose upraised rifle was poised over the blond bead of her companion. Again tbe motors roared overhead. The sound of rifle Ore grew. Tbe man she clung to went limp under a slash from Langton'a flat. She saw a knife upraised Jn a brown flat Langton'a sinewy hand darted out and twisted It away. A lunging na tive knocked ber dowu to the steps. Her wildly roving glance fell upon a discarded knife a foot from oer hand. She snatched It up as Langton burat through the twisting bodies of the guarda toward her. He gaspea, "We can't get awayl Try to reach the ahkln and" His sentence ended In a moan as a clubbed rifle hit him behind the head. He -'tched toward Janice. The guard who had struck him turned his eyes, crszed with excite ment. toward Janice. Slowly it seemed almost slow motion he reversed bis rifle. Tbe girl knew In that Instant he Intend ed to shoot herl She struggled backward up tbe steps. She was barely conscious that she bad backed against the Jaguar cage. Her eara were deaf to tbe savage growls behind ber. Tbe rifle was raised still with tbat Illusion of retarded action. The native's teeth bared, tbe muscles of his band tightened over tbe trigger guard. A spurt of flame darted from the mussle. Monday, retribution dtieands upon th jungles of Yucatan. E KITOENB.
