'OMR HALF OF EGO n.r A MX ft ON EDWARD United Praas ataff Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (UP) flomewhere between the Panama Canal and Holly wood recently, on her first trip to the film capital, jean Mulr lost one half of a carefully developed dual per son a! lty. The tall young actress, who was known on Broadway as jean Pullar ton. with emphaau on the "ar", both in spelling and pronunciation, decid ed after signing a Warner Brothers contract to change her "type" along with her name, "I will be mysterious." she promised herself. "I will become Inhibited. I will no longer say what I think or think about what I say." Jean held to her determination for the first hslf of the lone voyage, de veloping her "other side," be in mys terious and different and confound ing fellow passengers by her strange mood and melnncholles. By the time the boat reached the canal, Jean had her dual personality well In hand. Her pa'e fev and ques tioning blue eyes seemed to mask a tortured soul. Deck chair neighbors oecan to refer to her aa "poor thing. Then, suddenly, Jean decided jhe couldn't do It. She resented the sym pathy of traveling companions and da. velopod a. yen to take part In dinner tabls diactisslons. 0h went to her stateroom aa the boat was passing Ontral America and strangled bar "other half" to death. A day before she would have feign ed boredom, Indifference. But thla day thers waa a new Jean, a single-person sllty girl, flhe snA.t'red. "Hell, nol" she said. (As soclated Press Phototl STARTS RUSH TO SAN RAFAEL, Cal., March 8. (UP) The ambergris rush of Bollnoa bay, rivaling the mad scramble for gold In '49, was In full swing again today on the strength of a San Pranciaco chemist's report that at least one lump of foul smelling substance found by searchers Inst week Is gen uine ambergris, worth $28 an ounce. Smith, Emery & Co., of San Fran cisco, reported that a two-ounce sample of the cheese like stuff sub mitted for analysts by Louis Pepper was virtually identified physically with a specimen of genuine amber gris. Despite the firm's statement that the test referred only' to the Pep per sample, Marin county and San JTranclsco residents who had already gathered enough of the substance to net 1100,000 If all Is genuine locked the putrid samples In their Ice boxes and returned to the beach with flashlights and lanterns. Ambergris Is a substance given off by sick shales, highly valued In Lhe manufacture of perfumes. It la so rare on this coast that one dealer said he knew of no Instances of tt being found here for the past 20 years.. OLD KIDNAPING YARN PHILADELPHIA (UP) The recent wave of abductions throughout the country has revived Interest In tha legendary tale relating the contem plated kidnaping of William Penn In 1883. But Dr. Albert Cook Myers, fore most William Penn authority, de scribes the tale as a myth without basis of fact. Tha story had iU Inception in 1870 when a Pennsylvania newspaper pub lished a letter purporting to have been written by Cotton Mather, fa mous Puritan clergyman. Trie letter was dated September ye 15. 1083," and was addressed to "ye aed and be loved Mr. John Hlgginson." The letter said, "There la now at sea a ship called the Welcome, which has on board an hundred or more of the heretics and malignant called Quakers. W. Penn, who Is the chief scamp, at the head of them. "Th e genera 1 court h as accord -lngly given secret orders ... to way lay the said Welcome . . . and to make captive the said Penn and hla un godly crew." The letter recommendd "selling the hole lot to Barbndoea whre slaves fetch good prices in rum and sugar." Dr. Myers points out thet tha word "scamp" waa unknown until long af ter 1683 and that Cotton Mather was but 19 years old wh'n the letter wi said to have been written. He points out further, that James P. Shunk, whose newspaper, the Argus, printed the lettr, admitted later that the document waa a hoax. EARTH COVERED By METEOR DUST Advances Theory That Sur face Is Growing Under Continued Celestial Rain Of Very Small Particles. By ARTIIt'R F. GRANT United Press Staff Correspondent HARRTSBURQ. Pa. (UP) After a study of meteorites for sereral years, Ralph W. Stone, assistant state geolo gist, today advanced a theory that a coating of meteorite dust 19 inchea thick Ilea on the earth. This coating is an socumulatlon of 60.000.000 years or more, he said, and Is constantly being Increased, al though at such a slow rate it la not noticeable. Out of 470 meteoric falls since me teorites became known and accredit ed, 135 yeera ago, 130.000 Individual meteorites have been recovered, or an average of 277 per fall. This fig ure supplies one meteoric stone for each 400 square miles of land surface of the globe in a century and a quar ter. Most of the falls were observed Jn areaa of comparatively dense popu lation, and where surface conditions) were favorable for observation of th landing ,nd for recovery. "If we consider the 287 witnessed, falls In European countries. Russia, India. Japan and the United State, amounting to 139.349 individual me teorites of 450 stones per fall, in & combined area, of 7.350,000 square miles , we have one meteorite for av ery 5&i miles." Stone said. "During the 135 yeara, only two falls from which stonea were recov ered were observed In the whole west ern third of the United States, ap parently due to sparse population and the nature of the terrain. Although practically all observed falla from which stonea were recovered occurred In day time, there 1s no reason for as suming that falls are not just aa fre quent at night. "On these assumptions. It la conser vative to estimate that in these 13 countries at least 10 times as many meteorites fell aa were recovered, or one to each 5Vi square mtlea." If the rate of fall of the last cen tury has been constant, according to the assistant state geologist, each square mile of surface has received 737 meteoric units, in the 80.000.000 yeara since the beginning of tertiary time, on this basis of computation, the earth received 87,340 meteorite per square mile. "The weight of the 139.349 stones recoverod." he continued, "waa 17,074 pounds. This la a vry low aversgo since tha larger stonea usually bury themselves, but thla figure gives about two ounces per atone. "This would mean a. flve-tons-par-square-mlle average for tha entire earth, tn the last 138 yeara. "Should ws continue tha computa tion for longer periods, we get into ponderable figures. Then, If we fig ure not from the beginning of ter tiary time but from early Palezola Time, 600 million rather than 80 mil lion years ago, we get a weight of material which certainly would maka the earth wabble on Its axis if con centrated In one spot on tha surface." Stone added that besides tha me teorites which land, about a million an hour dally are consumed in our atmosphere before striking the earth, "Considering five pounds tha aver age weight of these, that would mean 50,000 tons of meteor I o dust sifting down dally. Distributed over tha globe, however, the result would ha a layer one millimeter thick In 10.000 years, or a blanket 19 feet deep la 80,000,000 years."
