To him Janice's, decision In Holly wood had been uncompromising; there was no further appeal to be made. Any thought or speculation upon what might have been served only to stir unpleasant memories. Langton bad said that she was a girl of courage; to Frank this en. forced Intimacy had given him a greater opportunity to Judge: shs was magnificent miraculous. That night he helped Langton complete the balsa-wood Jacket It waa a clumsy affair made of two foot lengths of this curious wood that Is lighter than cork. The survey was made by the Federal Reserve Bank of "3an Francisco, and reported today. The Index of employment for the tate was 60 in January that Is. Payrolls stood at 40, against 30 in January, 1933 and 45 9 December. There waa a aharp decrease from the December level of employment. All groups except textiles shared In this decline. The greatest contraction was in the lumber Industry. Studies made by the bank's statis tical staff to show net rhanges after allowing for seasonal Influences pro duced the following set of employ ment Indicators: The seasonally adjusted Index stood at 71 In January, with payrolls at 49. "He was asleep and dreaming," Frank suggested. Langton looked thoughtful. The wo men did not press her with fur ther comment or question, but as ol one accord they made their way to the stream's edge. The sky waa sullen overhead: It bold more than a bint of rain It was ' threat. The stream undoubtedly was higher, tawny with the dlacol oration of vegetation. It ran awlftly, definitely, and dlf ppeared Into the maw of the lowpi cavern leaving little sponges of yel low foam clinging to the rocky pnr tals.
