State Has 240 Stores With Low Prices Yielding Huge State Revenue Old Age Pension to Be Provided MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. fEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16. 1934. 71i)i HARRISBURO, Pa. (UP) Now In full cwlng throughout the state, Pennsylvania's 240 liquor stores are do ing a dally business of many thou sands of dollars. Since the stores opened January 3. under the supcrvleion of the Pennsyl vania liquor control board, they have taken In more than a million dollars, according to the board. Out of revenue from the stores, the state la to pay for old age pensions, assistance for the blind, and other benevolences, under a plan Instituted at the last session of the state legis lature by Qov. Olfford Ptnchot. Prices In the stores range from 1 per fifth for blended whiskey, up to 7 per quart for bonded and Imported whiskies, Olns, domeetlo and Im ported, ranges from as low as 83 cent per bottle up to $3.50. In the first two weeks of the new liquor system, 143.606 pints of blend ed whiskies were sold. Oln sales to taled 42.22S bottles. Among the bond ed whiskies, 3.635 quarts and 8.826 pints were sold. Scotch whiskey ilrlnkers purchased 3.723 bottles. Among the higher priced domestic gins, only 68 "fifths ' were sold. Sales of sherry, most demanded amone the wines, totaled 20.868 bot tles of domestic and 1.896 bottles of Imported. Rum sales totaled 340 bo: ties. The biggest revenue raiser. In the eyes of the liquor control board, la a 81.90 per pint blended whiskey, which yielded 827,652 from sales of 14.524 bottles. In popularity, nowever, e $1.15 per pint blend leads the list, of which 21.439 pints were sold for a totsl revenue of $24,654. Altogether, several hundred brands of liquor and wines are offered by the state stores. When purchaser finds his nearest store doea not have a certain brand In stock, he can leave a deposit and require the store to obtain It for him. This applies also to brands not on the price list. Members of the liquor board say the prices compare favorably with those charged by the liquor stores In Canada, In some cases being lower. In addition to the proceeds from the stores, the state la obtaining an additional revenue variously estimated up to $13,000,000 from the $2 per - Ion floor tax on splrltous llquois which were on hand when repeal be came effective. To forestall an Im pending court suit on the legality of this tax, the liquor board haa agreed to purchase all these liquors from the distillers for resale In the liquor stores. Other liquors, however, shipped out of the state, bear no other Penn sylvania tax. A margin of profit al lowed for the state stores waa de signed to remove necessity for a state tax. but no provision wss made for taxing; the exports. EARTH'S CLIMATE By EVERETT H.
