In a flash he realltet that from now on alt hit effort will be expended toward retculnf) Jan ice from a hlahlu danaerout pre dicament. Chapter it ' AMBUSH "T THINK." ald Juan finally, "that 1 they will slay there today. At this season, It rains In the late after noon, and sometimes at night It la more pleasant to be about between the showers. I think these people are all sleeping now." . Still Orabame hesitated to leave his look-out. "It you will climb down to our packs. 1 will watch tor you. There Is nothing we could Jo now, except learn It they take those prisoners elsewhere. Even then we could do nothing, and we might he seen here sooner or later. Also, I am hungry.' Juan smiled aa he mentioned his appetite. Frank gare him an uncertain smile. "Maybe you're right, son, Let's both slide down. 1 have s hunch we oughi to find aome aafe place not tar trom here, and hold a council of war. "Not that any place near here would be particularly safe. But It ought to be nosslble to find a spot where we could keep out ot sight, and yet be able to get Into the city during the night, or Into the Jungle tor food. They made a cautious descent, and slipped toward the trail they had tett ao precipitously that morn' tng, beside which they had cached their packs. Juan was in the lead, a trall-posl- tlon that Orabame usually accorded him, aince he had found that the boy had a canny Instinct In sensing trail-danger, before he, Orabame, could evor possibly be aware of It They reached the tangle of fallen scrub palmetto where they bad left their packs. Orabame heard Juan's low murmur of astonishment and hurried forward. Unconscious of the action, the American's fingers elosed over the butt of his auto matic. Juan stood staring thoughtfully at the place where they had left the packa. There was no doubt that this bad been the spot; the grass ind palm leaves still shewed lndcn tatlons where the weighty sacka had been; but the packa, with their hammocks, their extra clothing and ammunition,' with their first-aid kits and emergency rations, were gone! At the Instant of discovery Juan ill) a thing which proved that Jungle-wisdom is Instinctive. He leaped backward toward Grahame. The American, muscles reacting to the suddenness of the boy's move ment, crouched. From a screen ot bush bohlnd the pot where their packs had been, the naked torso of a man appeared, golden In the sunlight He held In bla banda a rlfl In a camera-abut- ter glimpse, Orabame saw tbat the butt of the gun was almost to his shoulder. The American fired trom under his arm, the mustle ot his pistol barely tree ot tbe holster. With the report ot tht shot the man slipped through the bush onto his (ace. The rifle, falling from bla limp handa, clattered against a stone. A MBUSH! Orabame saw Juan'a arm crook backward, and then snap forward like a uprlng released trom compression. A silver streak sped from his hand and Into tbe bush to the left There was a thud, the unmistakable sound ot a knife slapping Into flesh and a short, throaty "Ah-h," Two rifles cracked. Grahams felt a tug at bla collar where his shirt flared away trom bla neck; then tbe sound ot a bullet crackling through underbrush. He Orel quickly, right and left, at the taint wreaths ot smoke curling upward. He heard a cry. From the corner ot his eye be saw Juan weaving backward, half crouched. He followed. Two ec centrle leans brought them to cover. Once again a rifle oracked. The bullot whined harmlessly overhead. The action had taken only a few seconds. Stealthily they slipped Into the jungle. Behind them they heard a shot or two, and the sound of mauy voices raised In shouted question and answer. They rsn now more oponly, careless ot the noise they made. Frank knew that dlstsnce between them and their pursuers countod vitally. A half-mile from the scene ot tho ambush, they pauseu. "Where now?" asked Qrahame. breathing deeply. "II our legs are better than theirs which I doubt we might make the coast ahead of them." "There's a chance," mused Urahame. "They would travel more slowly, fearing ambush. You could never hope to hide your trail. It L worth the chance. We part here, Juan. You've been a good boy. Head tor the coast tbe best way you can, and may luck be with you." He held forth his band. "And you, Senor?" "While you go east, I will head south, for a while. Later I will con fuse my trail. If 1 can, and return here. They will follow me, which will give you the better chance. "No," said Juan. "Yes." corrected Grahame. "This Is an order. 1 have a plan. There Is a white woman held captive In tbe big pyramid. 1 must see that she escapes, or " . "I know," Interrupted Juan sober ly. "Tbe senor Is not Catholic?" Puzzled, Grahame shook his bead; whereupon Juan said. "Well, tbat Is doubtless a very good thing. It will not matter so much If you die unsbrlven." Despite his concern tbe American chuckled. "Beat It now, son. We've talked quite long enough. Goodbye, and again, good luck." "Adlos." answered Juan with a se cretive smile. He turned, pressed the American's hand, and then passed Into the jungle to the east' ward. TO Grahame, slipping southward, a half hour later, came tbe thought tbat as Juan had left blm, the boy had aeemed in be most care less about ine trail be left So Juan was giving him, Grahame, a break, just aa be bad Intended giving ono to Juan. The American shook his bead. A good lad, Juan. What a pity If he could not make the coast, and safety. Ha noticed, to the right of blm, a barren rocky expanse, dotted only with spiny sisal and scrub cactus. He entered It and carefully picked his way between the vegetation, be ing sure that hla boots touched only stone. He hoped those following blm would be careless, and conclude tbat ha waa bearing south. Halfway through the rocky field, he worked to the right finally making almost a complete turn, so tbat he headed northwest toward the habitation of bla enemies. In the late afternoon the sun clouded over, and Orabame watched the big Iguana lizards slide from the rocks and .disappear Into their dens. He took a lesson from these roptllea and kept an eye out for shelter. A tew minutes later he found It In a heap of jungle-grown slabs, another ruin. He entered an open ing, and composed himself to wait until the afternoon downpour was over. Already he saw large drops splashing over bis back-trail. i The shower waa u stroke of luck. If he were not followed too closely. the rain would obliterate any sign he may have left The day became dark. Lightning flickered, and thundei crashed above; whereupon rain descended In torrents. The sheet oi falling wa ter obscured his view past the en trance. Then, as suddenly as It be gan, the down-pour lessened, and again hts sight of the outside jungle waa clear. Tbe rain diminished to c mist and stopped entirely. Qrahame arose to his feet and drawing bis pistol from Its bolster under his arm, was about to dismount It tor cleaning, while there remained light enough to do so, when he froze Into Immobility. A shadow drifted past, coming trom the south. Another went by. Slowly Qrahame bent Into the gloom cast by the wall beside the opening. His trailers! He counted them aa they faded across the opening. Eleven. Enough, thought the American, to settle his account. He wondered ai the skill that kept them on his trail. The rain had been his salvation. He heard a guttural voice speak In an unknown lan guage, and the reply flung back trom ahead. This puzzled the American, as he felt that they would not be so care less ot souno If they bolleved that their quarry waa ahead. Or per haps they had glvon up the chase and wore returning. That was II. They had lost hU trail within tht atone patch, and were returning from the southward to their city. Perhaps It was only a section of a largor party that had spread In different directions.
