Gra bame took off a b kbakl eunnelmet and iot It beside the overturned wa ter pan. McOralh's eyes stared glasslly at nothing. "Poor devil," said Grahams. "1 irlsh he had let me give him the hypo." They burled McGratb In the swamp. Returning, tbey re-lighted their fire. Altbougb there was plenty of game about, they dared not risk a shot, so ate a meal of cold beans , and meat. They slept tor several hours. Gra hams decided th t for comfort's sake the troupe ahead of them would travel all nigbt Juan agreed tbat tbls was probably true, and If they began to follow about midnight, they could comfortably and safely follow the trail for at least sli hours. They awoke at eleven Juan slipped oft Into the darkness and In a little while returned with a large bush turkey dangling by his side. He grinned when Grahame questioned him. "You beard this one this after noon. He sleeps in a tree not far from here. Tonight " he chuckled. " he sleeps with us." The boy dressed and cooked the bird tropic refrigeration. The cooked meat would last them through the next day. They ate, and began their march southward along the trail. Grahame pondered npon what McOratb had I told him. The taklnt of moving pic tures id mis cruel country seemed a little Incredible. It It were authentic ruins they wanted, there were several within a day's train ride of Morlda. the capi tal of Yucatan, and a civilized place. There was no reason for striking outb of Merlda Into this unknown country. The wounded man had mentioned the name Ortega. While tbe name was a common enough one, never theless Frank began to have a pre sentiment that the name was re curring too often to be entirely co incidence. It was an Ortega whom be bad never seen that bad been In volvedhe still thought In Jan Ice's abduction In Hollywood. It was Ortega who Had landed tbe arms at the hacienda on the east coast. While that had happened two weeks before, still, Ortega In th launch, could have been back at . Merlda In three days. And It had bet-n from Merlda that till another Ortega bad guided the man McGrath In a southeasterly di rection to thl spot. That Is, If It bad been another of the same name. Frank shook his head In pustlement Tbe dying man had said others were to follow Probably a whole group of actors and technical men. Women, too, most probably. He was truck with a sudden chill. Janice Kent might be among them! Supposing this was Myberg's com pany of people come to Yucatan tor location. He remembered now tbat Spin Wlnslnw bsd said that Myberg liked authentic backgrounds snd that tbls man, urtega. was to have guldod them to where bigger and better ones were. This would be a beastly place tor women If the plan was to come here. He uttered an exclamation that was bait Irritation, halt fear. Juan paused but at Grahame's gruff word continued on. McORATH had "aid that his Or , tega bad bee captured by the .Indians who bad assaulted them. Supposing, then, thai he was one land the same with the man wbo had landed the guns. Because ot that he would have some sinister under standing with these lungle people and would net be harmed. He might evn be allowed to relurn to Merlda 'where he could make plans to bring the remainder ot the motion picture people Into this p, ace and to their ': destruction! He speculated upon th motive. tnn d!r-ised the train of thought as being unimportant Plenty of mo tive for a criminal Itnbbory tor one, ! ransom perhaps, although the lat ter seemed Improbable sine Mo Orath had been murdered without a chance to buy himself out of his difficulty. Were there women along, there would be another possibility. Although the night was cool, the sweat started trickling trom bis forehead, and tbe palms ot his bands were slippery. He called ahead to Juan, who slowed his pace until his back was but a yard or two ahead of Grabame, "Tell me, son." b said. "Have you ever soen these people who live la tbe Jungle?" "Often. We call them sublevados unconquered ones. The men com to the coast at tbe right season and bring blocks of chicle which they sell to th agents. ' , "What do they look llker i "A poor lot." Juan spoke contem tuously. "Barbarians. None have ever beard of th Virgin of Guada lupe, or of the Church, tor that mat ter. They will burn In Hell, all of them, which Is a pity perhaps, sine some ot them are white. I have even seen blond ones." "Wbat!" exclaimed Grahame. "Did you say white?" "SI, senor, white." He chuckled in the darkness. "Ah, those Spaniards were great travelers. They tell me Cortes himself was rublo, blond." "Have you ever seen their wo men?" "No," answered Juan shortly. "Nor has any other Mexican either. Tbat Is the reason, 1 think, why these Jungle people bate us so. When Diss was president, he sent troops in her wbo acted badly. That was years ago. Tbey were all killed." "11-m-m." Grahame strode along In silence. Blood calls to blood. It there were renegade whites living la some Jung! sanctuary, perhaps there was mora than Just robbery behind tbls Ortega's plan to bring the motion picture troupe with wo menInto this inaccessible place.' Grahame's belief was growing that McGrath's Ortega and the one wbo had taken blm li bis launch to th east coast were of one and the same identity. Some Instinct told him also that th Ortega ot Hollywood might be the same man. He remembered how tbe man had run from blm, bis arm dangling. Ha saw again the white Jacket he wore showing plainly against the dark background as he sped toward the back trail. As ha recalled now be bad bad this target In the sights ot bis auto matic, and then had lowered tba arm, be sighed. He wondered if ever he could shoot J. man In the back, no matter how richly that man might deserve killing If this man war Ortega, and he was In the business of luring men and women Into nelpless situations for the purposes of murder, rob bery and worse, he should be ex terminated, like a rattle-snake on sight, THE night grew cooler. Toward morning, the jvngle gave way to a chain of open savannahs, through which the trail followed. Deer bound ed up from the tall grasses, bird-life made a sleepy -iln; once a dark shadow Hit ted ahead of them, some kind ot large cat, thought Graham as ha swung his rifle's mur.il for ward. "No!" called Juun sharply. Jaguar! Dangerous. You may only wound It!" A half hour later abruptly dawn broke over the tre tops. Juan turned hla head questloalngly. "Not yet," the American replied to th unspoken Interrogation. "It will be cool for another couple ot houra." i They strode onward. -Already the ' mists of morning arose with humid promise of approaching heat. A small hill thrust upward out ot the brush and palmetto, ahoad of them. Gra hame wondered at Its abrupt topog raphy In a country that for some miles had been quit flat. He stopped to adjust his pack. Then from somewhere ahead of them bedlam broke loose. ! First were two shots closely spaced, followed by a rattle ot sustained rifle fire. Thsre was sboutlng, and a drum ming ot boots. Q,abam grasped Juan by the arm and pulled him off the trail. Careening uown th trail toward them came a charging burro. Its pack lurching and swaying with escb convulsive leap As It galloped by, Graham saw th broken tether rope dangling from Its neck. With back bent th man and th boy slipped away from the trail to ward the small hill tbat Graham had noticed a tew minutes before. As they crawled up the steep sides ot th hill, th rifle Or ceased, but fro (f side of the hill opposlt them they heard the sounds ot many people moving about The hill was difficult to climb without noise. Pieces ot stoue of conventional rectangular shape lay about This wsa evidently some forgotlen Mayan edifice, Grahame believed, as he care fully tested each upward step. A tun-gle-bldden fragment built by a lost race, Th country had many such. (CetviiH. I'M. h Uere-l .....) Tomorrow, Frank seat s atartllng i sight. Eakln of the Eakin Motor Co., recently appointed Terraplane dealer for this vicinity, has ust re turned from the Terraplane and Hud son dealers' convention held by Co hen-Anderson Motor Co., for this area. "Never In my history as an auto mobile dealer." said Mr. Eakln, "have I Attended a more enthusiastic tnan meeting than the Terraplane and Hudson meeting held in Portland, from which I have Just returned. The new Terraplane and Hudsons f r 1934 are roomier, larger and finer In appearance than their predecessor, and in spite of the fact that they ore bigger in every respect will out-per form even the famous cars of this line for 1933. "The cars are ultra-modern in every respect. They incorporate features which are distinctive of this line alone. We believe that we can prom ise the people of Med ford an interest ing exhibit with the arrival of these new models which are due here soon. "Although these cars are-bigger and more luxuriously appointed than ever, not one lota of their performance abil ity has been sacrificed. In fact, the, contrary is the case. "After viewing the 1934 Terraplanes and Hudsons and listening to the sates executives who spoke to us. I find it difficult to restrain myself from all release dates on this material and telling th public in this vicinity all1 about these new cars. However. I am duty bound not to give more than Just a, few hints. The features which are include! in these new cars repre sent the most advanced tendencies of the day and Incorporate many ideas which I believe will be exclusive to the Terraplane and Hudson lint. "Our order for our first carload of the new 1934 Terr ap lanes and Hud sons has been placed, We will be able to disclose this new line to the peo ple of Medford In the near future." ON FIR STREET I.
