Her child' leh treble broke. Tears streamed from her eyes as the (ell beside the little body. Dust, dog and all abe gathered Into ber arms aid knelt there awaylng and weeping. Grahame, strolling around the cor ner toward tbe wharves, caught sight ot the small tragedy before him. He threw away bla clgaret and lifted the child ti her feet. She still .clung to the dog. "What Is It?" ha exclaimed In Spanish, brushing tbe dust from the little girl's dress. There was a fresh flood of tears. ".My little dog! My child. My angel. 'Dead!" Grahams glanced swiftly at the 'bullet wounds and growled, "Who (did It?" "I don't know." Sobs wrenched ber breast. "There, there," be said soothingly. "We will take your child home and bury him fittingly. Here . . ." He pressed a peso into ber hand. "This will buy a wreath and a prayer from I the padre." He lifted the child, who latlll clutched ber pet in ber arms, to bis own, and strode toward the bouse she pointed out "He was so young,". quavered tbe girl. I The town was stirring from Its dally siesta, as, a .little later, Grahams continued his' Interrupted -walk to tbe wharves. "At your service," replied the man brushing the rags aalde. The American stared at the gun. "When do we leave?" "Whenever you wish. Imme diately." Grahame leaped down to the launch's deck. He looked again at the revolver. "Was It yon that I beard shooting In tht town a little while agor Don Raoul hesitated. "No," he re plied. "I have beun here for hours." The two men paused with their rope-colling and glanced at Ortega. One of them grinned and turned bis bead. Don Raoul spoke to them sharply and one went below while the t ither loosed the lines that held the craft to the wharf. From below earns tbe sound of the engine cough ing Into activity. An hour later the Progreso light house was a bat point astern, and the Yucatan coast a low line to tbe starboard as they pushed agalnat the Gulf current. Grahame and O.'tega lounged In the cockpit, smoking and Idly watch ing a school if porpoise roll through the waves ahead. Halt the gentlemen In Mexico, I think, are related. Why do you ask? Somo friend of yours?" Frank had filled bis pipe and lighted It "No friend ot mine," be answered. "But I would like to ask him tome questions . . . that he might find difficult to answer." Ortega had given him a flickering glance. He smiled a curiously reti cent smile. "What did you say your name was, senor?" "I didn't ssy," answered Grahame abruptly. He did not like Don Raoul. Thert was something sinister traslre about the big Mexican. But It was fortunate that bt was able to get this transportation around Cape Catoche, and down the coast of Quintans Roo. "But you cannot want to be left on a little Island off the coast That Island scarcely supports a few fish ing families." The other shrugged his shoulders. "Then wby should It be dangerous for me? I can take care of myself." 'Ah , . ." Tht Mexican looked ei presslonleasly at Grahame. "It Is possible, then, that you seek a dan gerous place, tor reasons of your own, where someone could not fol low?" Perhaps," replied Grahame In- differently. THEY ate just before dusk, tht Inevitable beans and rico, with slabs ot a delicious mackeral-llke fish one of the crew bad hauled aboard from a troll-ilne. Grahame spread his blanket In the bow ot the launch and rolled himself with in It Ortega seated himself In the cockpit with tbe two that composed tht crew and tht American could hear their voices above the chug ot the engine, talking betweon them aelvea. Drowsily he wondered why they had set out no running lights but decided that tht trufflo in that part ot tbe coast warranted no such pro tection. ' He wondered about that point again the next day. They bad been sailing within a quarter of a milt of tht coast when Ortega pointed astern. The crew followed bit ges ture with their gate, and Grahame noticed a smudge of smoke over tht distant hortion. Immediately the helm waa put over and tbe launch headed tor tht beach and a point where tht surf diminished. There were no orders given, but one ot tbe men went be low and the exhaust ot the engine Immediately picked up. As they approached the short Grahame noted that tbe beach swept back into tht opening ot a lagoon. Within a few minutes the launch passed through .he narrow straits and onto tbt placid waters of a la goon that stretched back paralleling the beach. Grahame be lieved he could make out the flag It flew as Mexican. He asked Ortega sbout this. "A gunboat surely," he replied. "'Mexican." "And we avoid it?" Ortega shrugged. One could sot tell, he explained, what tht military might do. They had so little to do that they mlgbt stop them and search the launch. It was often done. It was a bother and a great annoy ance, to It was better to avoid tbe meeting. "But even If they searched yon, what could they find?"
