(UP) Trie sales tax, . probably to be voted on May 18, la almost ai o!4 as civilization, tax com mission officials announced today. The government of ancient Athena levied varloua tnxea on aalea, Includ ing aalea of landed property. Certain typea of aalea taxes were Impoaed In Palestine In biblical daya. Taxation of aalea of specific com modities, such aa salt, was common tn Egypt, China, India and other na tlona lone before the Christian era. The government of Egypt levied a 6 per cent sales tax against all com modities. When the Romans con quered the land, they thoughtfully raised the rates to 10 per cent. Sales taxes were levied In Borne un der Augustus, and were also Imposed upon the conquered lands of Spain and France. A national sales tax wm established by the government of Spain In 1343. A B per cent aalea levy was applied In Franca by Louis XI tn 1314. . There haa never beon a general sales tax In the United states, though one of a limited nature waa imposed by the government for a time following the Civil war. Since then many sales taxes have been levied at various timee against particular commodities, auch a tobacco. Many of the ancient aalea taxea were imposed lor the purpose oi col lecting tribute from captive peoples, or for keeping the lower claases In subluxation. west Virginia In 1031 established the first general state sales tax. Sev enteen states now have them in op eration. Five states, Including Ore ton, have them under consideration. ADDED CROP LOAN ' WASHINGTON, Feb. I. UP) A bill to extend crop production loans to 1934 to a total of 135,000,000 wis approved today by the house agricul ture committee. ' To be eligible for the crop loans, an applicant would be required to show his Inability to obtain an adequate loan on reasonable conditions from a production credit aaoclstlon, and that he waa cooperating in tne proaucwon control program. . The loans, at not over 8 per cent Interest and limited to 300 a person, would be secured by first Hens on the crops or livestock. The 300 limit could be waived for distressed area KING CO.
