Already the whirling crankshaft was putting an Impossible strain on the connecting-rods. Within min utes one of them would give; then, if the big motor did not fly apart. It would stall. The plane was nose heavy. HE turned to call to Wlnslow to tell him to bank and attempt a return up the coast to Coronado and San Diego. The engine clattered suddenly.
