OPINIONS VARY ON
SWINE POPULATION
FOR AM RECORDS
There seema to be considerable dif
ference of opinion, official and pri
vate, as to the hog population of
Jackson county which will come un
der the hog-corn production adjust
ment campaign launched here last
week.
Records of the assessor's office
hhow 2633 hogs, of a value of 18.830,
and these are the figures that ap
pear on the tax rolls.
The federal hog census, takeu tn
1P30 by various farmers, places the
number at 6300.
H. A. Llndgren of the animal hus
bandry bureau of the Oregon State
college, who addressed the hog-corn
meeting last Tuesday, and C. C. Hoo
ver, a, hog raiser, said the above fig
ures were too low. and Vint there
were between 15,000 and 20.000 hogs
in the county.
County Agent Robert O. Fowler
said this morning that the federal
figures "were about right," and that
hog production In this section "has
decreased about 40 per cent In the
past ten years." The county agrnt
said the number of hogs varied dur
ing different seasons.
Emmett Nealon said he was a hog
census taker In Vie Sams Valley dis
trict and that "the count was cor

the right number of hogs, as at the

time there wa no reason for not
telling the hog population." Mr. Nea
loa further stated, "Hog raising
around .hers Is not very hot as we
ship in most of our bacon.'
When tfie hog-corn production
contracts sr signed, it Is expected
that the approximate number of hogs
In these parts will be determined.
Under federal rules It will have to
be accurate- as the government la
not prone to pay a bonus on too
few or too many hogs.
County Agent Fowler expects to
have the schedule of community
meetings on the hog-corn production
adjustment program ready by next
week and will start holding them.
