PARE TWELVE BLOND A New Srll 8YNOP8IB: Frank Grahams, avi ator and explorer, hot seen a vut turlne face peering throuph the window of the movie executive Uy berg's oflice ; later he tollowe Jan i:e Kent's oar in a taxi because he hae teen o eecon t cor with three suspicious-looking men in it trail ing M iss Kent'e limousine. There ie a collision, and frank knocke out the driver of the second car, and takes Uiss Kent home. Frank is drawn to the beautiful movie star. He is disturbed bv the disappear once of! the Mexican coast of his friend Lanaton. the famous avi ator, and Interested fctf the pros pect of a contract with illberg's firm. Chapter Fir INTRODUCING SPIN IT WAS natural that Grahams ha asked to coma to Hollywood on an "opportunity contract". It was natural that he ahonld accept It. Grahams was quits willing that he be "found." Hs loved ths jungle: he -would always love It. but civiliza tion bad begun to take on a mora substantial glamor that ba bad ever thought possible. He would always teel a poignant ache at dawn or at sunset In Holly wood Docks of parrots do not spin like vivid green wheels against a background of old rose, smooth ea runnabs do not shoulder between sullen walls ot Jungle, nor do strange flower scents wrap you when yon sleep. Nevertheless Grahams liked cit ies, or at Bny rate, this one. He bad discovered two old baddies among the flying stunt-men. Another had "gone native" and played heavies. These spoke ot still others that be would remember knowing well he fore he quit piloting planea for piloting jungle expeditions per sonable, adventurous fellows that be had known In far corners, wltb whom be could yarn In vainglorious exaggeration. He was about to make his decision to stay when he met Janice Kent. As ba helped her from her car and across the lawns to her Beverly Hills bouse he wss sure thst this accidental meeting wss sbout to add pleasant finality to this decision. ; A maid iok his bat from him TFlthln tLa entranca. Janice smiled toward him aa she mounted the tairs. ' "I'll bs down In a minute or two," the said. "I'll phone Mr. Greene In the meantime." In the drawing room, standing be fore the open fireplace, Frank thrust his upturned palms toward the crackling logs. It seemed Incongru ous In these tastefully appointed surroundings ot civilisation to allow himself to think ot sinister shadows, ot furtive pursuit; yet a frown ot abstracted reflection remained on his forehead. Thoughtfully he rubbed at the slight soreness ot bis right knuckles. Ho could not drive away the mental Image ot ths vulture-llks prollls shadowed on the studio window. Some dim memory faintly stirred obscure as tb hushed pulse of a 'native drum felt, rather than heard, across miles of jungle. GRAHAMB, home In his apart ment, stared moodily at the afternoon paper on his lap. With an angry gestura he pushed away tbs Ipaper and stood up. He turned to 'another man seated where a west erly sun's rays slanted In. i "Tell me, Spin," he ssld. "Yon know this racket out here. What In bell do they mean by publishing all this tripe? I called you over here 'five minutes after I bought this pa per. You work for Myberg and the Consolidated; so does Janice, and so t suppose, does this little liar -ireene. Look! ... He kicked the paper to ward the other. Spin Wlnslow grinned. Hs did Inot glance at the paper but contem plated with a loving absorption ths contents ot his tall glass. "What's It sayT You tell me, Frank. Did Oreene aay yon fought desperately with a hundred-thugs and snatched the swooning Janice 'from their hairy clutches t" Grahams snorted. "Something like itbat, only worse. I thought there wss something phnn about tbst little ant when 1 in n Inst night. He asked me If I li Daby pictures. Baby pictures' . had the guts about two o'clo. k unlay to phone and ask about them again . . said hs wanted them for an article ha was calling, 'Babyhood Romance Pickers In Tragedy.' I thought he wss kidding, but I bought this paper Just to see." He laughed frostily. "But be wasn't." "Moreover It said that Miss Kent was confined to her bed with shock. She was all right when 1 left her last night unless Greens shocked her with sn outline of what he was go ing to writs today. I phoned todsy to And out It sbs really was III . , . She a frail, delicate little thing" Wlnslow laughed whole-heartedly. TRUCK RIDERS' SKULL CRACKED BY TRESTLE TILLAMOOK. Ore, Jan. 18. You phoned anu couldn't reach her?" "Yes, It worried me. I Say, how do you know?" Wlnslow chuckled Into bis glass. "She was st the studio with Myberg and Ortega and me. She was con fined all right but not to her bed. There's a new picture coming up a honey foreign stuff. She's to be the golden haired lead; I'm to fly the stunts. "They were discussing who'll play opposite her, but tbey can't tell who'd fit until the continuity men hack out a plot . . . What d'ye mean she's trail and delicate! You couldn't club that girl to denth she's whale- Frank helped her across ths lawn. bone and gristle under that skin you lovs to tou ". GltAHAME'S gesture Interrupted ths other. "Who's Ortegat" ("A gentleman from Central Amer ica, Mexican, maybe." Wlnslow drained bis glass and set It down. "I can't figure hlra myself. He showed up bore a montb ago with a lulu ot an idoa. Woll, you know tbe publicity these Cblchen Itia ruins In Yucatan are getting! He says be knows bigger and better ruins fur ther In that country with mors Jungle around tor tbe atmosphere sbola. "Yon know bow Myberg loves his authentic backgrounds, or should It you've looked at bis pictures. Well this Don Haoul Ortega's Idea la to use that old Mnya business aa the foundation. You've read stories ot tbs blond gods those snclent fellas used to worship. "Well tbls Is to be a blond goddess picture, or at least she Is to be bis bride. Tbe Bride ot Quettalcoatl Is the tentative name." He laughed. "Myberg said be didn't like tbe name. It reminded too many people of pants and vests." Orahama smiled. Ha liked this gossipy fellow whose nerves were ot steel beneath his happy-go-lucky, cynical exterior. But he wanted to know more ot tbls man Ortega whose name Janice Kent bad de tended so arbitrarily the evening before. He decided to take Spin partly Into his confidence. He told him that Miss Kent soemed to sgree thst the Idea that the accident may have been planned until Ortega's name was brought doflnltcly Into focus as ths party responsible. (Cefftsl.
