MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON. THURSDAY. JANUARY IS. 1934. PAOE THREE ILLEGAL OIL ILL TO TEXAS COUPLE Huge Uncontrolled Flow ' Near Houston Is Worth $7000 Daily Standard Pays for Drilling Mistake By TED II. MALOY (United Press Staff Correspondent.) HOUSTON, Tex. (UP) Jtm Aber- cromble and Dan Harrison, in depend - ent oil operators and staunch support ers of the NRA oil code, have been Its greatest violators. Furthermore, they have become fabulously rich from their violation, while other oil men were limited in tapping their underground mints. A "ruined" well in the Conroe field, near here, made them million aires. Each day for more than six months 6.500 barrels of oil bubbled from a crater 240 feet across that swallowed the Alexander No. 1 well being drill ed by them. Each day they added : approximately $7,000 to their bank accounts. In the six months their revenue from the Illegal oil reached 1.200. -000. That. In addition to 130,000 the Standard Oil company of Kansas gave them for admittedly ruining their well, and (300,000 the Humble Oil and Refining company gave them for the privilege of attempting to kill the well. Standard of Kansas made Its set tlement voluntarily because drillers 7 caused Its Madaley No. 1 to blow in out of control. Channeling the water sands 1.000 feet underground follow ed the blowout, and the earth began cracking, forming the crater about the nearby Alexander No. 1. First, the surface connections and the derrick disappeared. OH bubbled from the bottom of the pit for a short while, then stopped. The well was Inactive until June 19, then with an ominous rumb'3 1 blew great quantities of oil up. Humble Oil company bought the right to attempt to shu toff the flow. Abercrombla and Harrison reserved right to all oil from the crater as - long as it flowed. Hope of the other companies with holdings in the area has been placed In a California driller, who has push ed a pipe diagonally toward the bot tom of the mile-deep crater well from another 2,100 feet away. Great Elk Herd Evades Hunters; Now Faces Death by Starvation 3 WELCOME VALLEE WITH BRASS BAND ANP HUB CHORUS JT "" Game authorities fear many elk In the Jackson Hole country will perish from lark of food this winter. Too many or liiriii hctwrm :.-.N'ii mm 28,000 survived the hunting season. Above Is a herd of elk feeding on hay supplied by the U. S. biological survey farm near Jackson, Wyo. It Is grown expressly for them. JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) Starvation Is menacing the Jackson Hole elk herd, the largest In the world. Game wardens and old settlers of the region south of Yellowstone park fear a repetition of tragic scenes dur ing hard winters when thousands of the animals died. The very mildness of last autumn is what threatens the elk this time. There was no early snow on the high er ranges, and they remained in re gions Inaccessible to hunters while the open season was on. Shooters failed to get at them Tor the usual thinning of the herds which the Wyoming game and fish commission depends upon each year to prevent overproduction. The state legislature extended the open season until January 1 In an effort to allow more hunters to get their game. The dry summer and fall depleted feeding grounds which ordinarily pro vide forage for thousands of the wapiti and the supply of hay grown and stored by the United States bio logical survey farm Just outside of Jackson will be inadequate to keep alive the thousands expected to come into the valley later in the winter. The hay Is produced expressly for the elk. Estimates place the number of elk In the Jackfon Hole and surrounding country this winter at 25,000 to 28.000. OF I AREA PORTLAND, Jan. 18.
