A PPAKENTLY the leaders of the Socialist party do not like President Roosevelt. Someone has sent us one of their j party publications, devoted almost exclusively to criticizing the president, and lambasting the NRA; AAA; CWA; PWAj and all the other New Deal policies. This is easy to understand. Socialism flourishes on unrest and discontent. The party is strongest, when the government is weakest that is weakest from the standpoint of liberalism, and progressive enlightenment. The firat candidate or the season has ahowed up, and believe It or not, PRESIDENT RO'OSEVEIYT dashing courageously ahead, turn- ing more and more sharply to the Left, is obviously stealing the Socialists' thunder. The moro successful the New Deal is, the harder sledding the recruiting agents of the party will have. Naturally the Socialist leaders don't like this. Not that their opposition is based entirely on jealousy and pique. They have a perfectly legitimate grievance, from the standpoint of their own partisanship. For President Roosevelt appropriates the Socialists' aim, which is roughly the betterment of the common people, and some of their methods. But he DOESN'T, of course, go the "whole hog.".. , ' , He wants to achieve his goal, by readjusting, revamping and radically remodelling, the socalled capitalistic machine, and ho DOESN'T want to scrap it. The socialists want to scrap it, and build an entirely new machine from the grass roots up. So they call Roosevelt .an "entrepreneur" whatever that is, a half-way exhibitionist (to us another doubtful term), a "careerist" who claims to want a "better world" but isn't will ing to pay the PRICE for it. ; WHAT particularly interested us, in thi s anti-Rooscvclt edition, however, were not the more or less routine, parti san criticisms; hut a statement in one of the articles, which has a very familiar ring, but we haven't heard for a long time. Just why, I have never learned Today we are not so concerned about such re finement of diag nosis. Too, I fancy, ' the two forms of pneu monia have lost their characteris tics and we do not now see the typical cases the medical fore fathers described. Broncho-pneumonia, so-called, waa otherwise known as capillary bron chitis, and still farther back it was "suffocative catarrh." Sometimes now It Is called lobular pneumonia to In dicate that It consists of Inflamma tion of many scattered lobules thru out both lungs. Instead of massive Inflammation of one or more lobes of the lung, as In pleuro-pneumonla, otherwise called lobar pneumonia. Pleuro pneumonia was "lung fever"" away back when "suffocative catarrh" carried off aged feeble folk and chil dren who were getting over whooping cough, measles and the like. ' I , All pneumonia, so far as we know, is directly due to one or another strain of pneumococcus. Bacteriolo gists say that a non-virulent or harm less strain of pneumococcus la found in most mouths, where it seems to be a natural Inhabitant. Some half-baked health authorities and dllettant doctors air their com placency, by seizing on this fact to bolster up the anile theory that when one geta one's feet wet or sits In a draft or something, one's "resistance" whatever that may be is lowered, and then the pneumococct "lurking" In the mouth, Jump in and lay the host low with pneumonia. It la Just as simple as you are If you swallow the hackneyed line. Sci entifically, however, no one has ever found any reason to Infer that any such change In the character pf the pneumococcl in the saliva occurs. For that matter and I challenge , any one to cite scientific evidence to refute this assertion nobody has shown experimentally that moderate everyday exposure to cold, drafts, wet feet, sudden changes of temperature and the like hns any appreciable in fluence of an Individual's suscepti bility to or his -Immunity from any known Illness. Regardless of the type of pneu monia Indeed, It Is difficult In most cases today to classify there Is a growing Interest on the part of phy- slclans In the functional or physiolo gical aspect of the disease, the role played by atelectasis, that is, collapse of portions of lung. This Is certainly an Important factor If not the cause of the pneumonia that often occurs after anesthesia. There Is at least some reason to conjecture about this. The routine practice of administer ing to patients recovering from anes thesia Inhalations of carboxygen (oxygen 03, carbon dioxide 7 parts) has sharply reduced the number ot cases of post-operative pneumonia. This carbon dioxide causes deeper breathing, it la the natural stimulus to respiration. The moro vigorous breathing prevents or relieves atelec Dccause he has the'tasls. Prof. Yandell Henderson ad vises such Inhalations .of carbon diox ide both as prophylactic against "threatening" or impending pneu monia and aa treatment of advanced pneumonia. tlon of carbolic acid have If taken Internally? What would counteract It? E. B. Answer Epsom salts, Glauber's salts (sodium sulphate), lime water, are all good antidotes. The salts should be given In small doses three times a day for several days to help eliminate the poison from the sys tem. The quantity of pure phenol (carbolic) In three or four tablespoon -fuls of the 6 per cent (1 to 20) solu tion, which druggists are permitted to sell without prescription, might prove fatal, but diluted with water its effect la less destructive. The gravest effect would be the damage to the kidneys. The victim of such poisoning needs close medical care for several weeks. (Copyright, 1034, John F. DUle Co.) Ed.
