If It ahould repeat when the two

The Oregon fire, which Included

countered.
An eight-point rally requiring less
than two minutes, brought Washing

OPEN GOLF CROWN
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 9. (AP)
MacDonald Smith, a great golfer be
fore some of his present day com
petitors were born, had the, 1934 Los
Angeles open championship added to
his credit today as evidence that at
near forty-four years he still stands
high among the game's leaders.
The son of Old Cnrnoustle kept
pace with par and outdistanced youth
yesterday by shooting a 280 on the
rugged Los Angeles Country club
course to defeat an Impressive field
by a convincing margin.
It was Smith's fourth Los Angeles
open title In the nine years history
of the tournament. Coming twenty
four year after he tied for the nat
ional open championship. Victory
brought to him 91450 In prise money.
His victory margin remained to be
learned today for two rivals, Oeorge
Von Elm and Willie Hunter, were
halted by darkness at the seventeenth
tee yesterday. Von Elm, should he
shoot par on the last two holes this
morning, could lift himself Into sec
ond place with a 387, seven strokes
over par. Hunter had a potential
388 and a tie for third coming up.
Smith came through with two
sparkling sub-par rounds yesterday
a young and old alike cracked and
went to pieces around him.
