PAGE ETOHT MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUITE, MEDFORD, OREGON, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1933. UNFORBIDDEN VALLEY at William. Btjnow PlotuWf srsopsis: Curt Tennyson and Paul St. Clair, in northwestern Canada on tA trail 0 Igor Kara khan, international crook, ioin foroet with Ralph and Sonya Nich ols. They are attacked by tht dangerous Klosohet Indians, res eue an Indian lelt behind by his retreating band, and learn that thert trill not b a return attack for om days. Curt suddenly de cides to liy to Vancouver to set what he oan learn about Bonya's mysterious mission. Exhausted, he sleeps while Smash Desplamet, ttilots the plant south. Chapter 28 TANGLED THREADS IN th pier office Curt called the Marlln borne, talked briefly with A-K, promised him a report later that evening, and Bent Smash ont there. At Mounted headquarter he found Holden and Inspector Bald win In the tatter's private office, polishing their plans tor a narcotic raid that night When he knocked and nent In, Baldwin looked around and saw him. "Hello, Curt, old manl" He got p. abook hands warmly. "Holden and I have been wondering how you were making out. But 1 say, Where's tur friend Karakhan? We fancied that when you showed up you'd hare him In tow." He made Curt take his iwlrel cbalr and shoved blm tbe cigarettes. Curt was surprised at bis friend liness, so different from his resent ment two weeks ago. Something had brought about a complete change of heart. He took a cigarette and lit It from Baldwin's match. "Oh, I'm letting Karakhan run loose a little longer while I follow up a side lead, Am If you're not too busy I'd appreciate ome help. "Which youll get Holden, take over this bop raid. Holden nodded and went out to the squad "room. Across the desk Curt sketched his work at Tellacet, at Russian Lake, and hla trip np tbe Lllluar. "Why I came down here to Van couver, Arn," be explained, "I've got to get complete data on Ralph Nichols and Sonya, and I'd like for you to help me. We won't have much trouble with Nichols. He's from Vancouver; I saw tbe labels on bis clothes and outfit Here's a roll of 91ms; you'll And two snaps of him on It the man with tbe cap, When we place Nichols, we'll go after his acquaintances and get ev erything we can." Baldwin scratched notes on a pad. Curt went on: "We may have more trouble with Sonya. I don't know her last name or where she's from; but I've got four snaps of her In that roll, and I think that when we once place Nich ols It'll be easy to get a lead on her. They're close friends and should have mutual acquaintances," "night!" Baldwin agreed. He pressed a button and a Mounted constable came In. "Otis, take this roll of dims and have prints in half an hour. Don't futile this." He turned to Curt "While I'm working on Nichols, you can be reporting to A-K. My car's outside. Take It" "Thanks, Arn. I'll go now." Baldwin walked out to tbe curb with blm. "Old man," as he gave Curt the keys, "I read that letter you wrote A-K from Tellacet" "He showed It to you?" "Yes, 1 say. It was damned gener ous of you to tell blm tbat 1 helped pick np Karakban's trail. I didn't have a blighted thing to do with It except to sit back and feel cocksure you'd falL I acted small then, and I've been wanting to say so." CURT was glad he had put that . sentence Into bis report A few generous words, costing nothing, had wiped out hard feelings and made Baldwin his old friend again. "By the way," Baldwin remarked offhand, "Helen Mathleson has men tioned you several times. If yon get ohance, call her np and say hello, won't youT Ton never told me uh, what yon thought of her." "She took me a real surprise, Arn. I thought she was as likable and weet a girl aa I'd met In a long time." "I'm glad to hear you say that. Just because she uh, associated wltb Karakhan, most people think she's of a sort wltb blm. I don't un derstand what the women like In the fellow Out he's certainly got a way with them. She's pulling out of it" "I'm glad she's forgetting. You've teen her since 1 was here!" "We uh, take an evening drive now and then. Yes, she's forgetting; but what I'd like. Curt Is tor her to have the whole truth about him. She knows about hit swindle game here In Vanooever; and excuses it in a way; but she's never heard a whis per sbooi Buenos Aires and those other Incidents. She wouldn't ex cuse those chapters." "Ton know as much aa I do; why ioB't yon tell her?" KMED Broadcast Schedule Sunday 10:00 Judge Rutherford, Lecturer. 10:16 Now Digest, Mall Tribune. 10:30 olly-T1ine. 10:48 to 11:00 Morning Melody. "Well, yon see, It'd be deuced awkward for me to do It She knows I'm a professional bloodhound, and besides sbe might think that the uh, personal element was coloring what I said." Curt suddenly realised that Bald win' Interest In Helen Mathleson out a lot deeper than a professional Interest 3trange an officer of the Mounted, and the girl whom the Cossack Karakban bad thrown aside. Luck dealt queer cards sometimes. "I'll do what I can, Arn," he prom ised. . "Will youT Old man, 111 depend on you for thatl I know she'd listen to you. On this other matter, I'll bo phoning yon before midnight" Curt left On his drive ont to the Marlln home he prayed that Rosalie would be gone for the week-end, aa she usually was. He had no definite thought of ever marrying Sonya Nichols; the whole situation be tween Sonya and himself waa so un certain and unpredictable that he oould not look ahead with any as surance whatever. But his Intimacy with Sonya bad revealed to blm a new strange vista, unguessed at In all his previous life. He had known Rosalie for eight years without their association quickening Into life or deepening be yond a casual comradeship; he had known Sonya less than two weeks, but It seemed to him that destiny Itself had led bin. to take np tbe Karakban hunt merely that he might meet and know ber. AT tbe Marlln home A-K answered his rlna. Smash bad cone to bed, A-K Informed, aa he took Curt out on tbe porch. Rosalie too was gone on a week's yachting trip to Seattle. Sorry," Curt mumbled, when ho heard that A-K brought a pitcher of Iced drink, drew two chairs beside the magazine stand, and listened olosely to the detailed report The account left him uneasy. The big part of the hunt, and the worst part still lay ahead, and several featurea of It looked ominous. Two men against three dozen for Curt to go back Into those mountains and con tinue the hunt was like a tryst wltb death. And this girl Sonya who was she, what was she doing In there, and wby nnder heaven had Curt handicapped himself with ber In a situation where he needed above everything else to be absolutely freer Curt must be Interested In ber, to put It mildly. Curt d'you suppose this girl can be an agent of European police? Enough of them want Karakhan badly. Maybe they sent a womsn to take him." Curt shook his head emphatically. It can't be, A-K. I know that posi tively; she couldn't have fooled me there." "What do you believe she la then?" I haven't the faintest Idea. Ex cept," he added, "she's a most ex traordinary person. I wish yon knew her. A-K." Marlln glanced at htm. "Wby?" he asked, bla suspicion almost a cer tainty. As he listened to Curt's halting at tempt to describe her. Marlln felt that Instead of liking this Russian girl he would dislike her Intensely. He disliked her even then, without eve: having seen her, for he saw that she bad crowded Rosalie en tirely out of Curt's thoughts. He looked away, to keep Curt from seeing his shock ant pain. It seemed Incredible that Curt, who had always been so rational In aucb matters, should fall In love with a girl of whom he knew noth ing and whom he had met less than a fortnight ago. Her alien origin, her secrecy, her going off on a long trip with a man who was no relation at all, strongly suggested that she waa aome sort of advuntnress. No doubt she was a brilliant girl ehe appeared to be a match for Curt at Curt's own game: and no doubt she had charm ing qualities or sbe could not have swept him off hla feet as she had done. But nevertheless she was an ad venturess, and Cnrt had an awaken ing ahead. He kept hla conviction to himself. It was not a matter In which one man could counsel another. Curt had to choose and travel his own path. Perhaps, Ood willing, that path would bring him back to Ro salia yet At eleven the phone rang. Bald win waa calling from a down-town hotel. 'Curt?
