vited. Thimble club of Oak Circle met at

commence work on a quilt at their

An earnest plea for support of
the annual Christmas seal sale was
made before the members of the
Med ford Rotary club today by Mrs.
Donald Clark, one of the prominent
Medford women Identified with the
health activities In this section of
Oregon. Mrs. Clark urged the Repa
rians not to stop with financial as
sistance but to thorougnly familiar
ize themselves with the splendid
work being accomplished by the na
tional association dedicated to the
task of fighting the spread of tuber
culosis.
Aa evidence of the success of the
campaign against tils dreaded dls
ease, the speaker presented' figures
which showed 68 deaths from tu
berculosis In every 100,000 people In
1931 contrasted with 201 deaths In
100,000 people In 1904. According
to authefttto figures, there are nine
active cases, cured to a great extent,
to every death from this disease.
"In early diagnosis and Intelligent
treatment lies the hope of cure from
tuberculosis," Mrs. Clark said. "Much
of the proceeds from sale of Christ
mas seals la expended upon a cam
paign of education as well as actual
prevention, and Vie seals provide the
only revenue for this very worth
whtleeffort."
Mra. Clark also reviewed the his
tory of tuberculosis, telling the Ro
tarlans that research has disclosed
the fact that pre -historic man was
airillcted with this disease. The Iso
lation of the germ was effected In
IB 63 and. since tfiat time, great
strides In controlling It have been
made In the medical field. The
speaker also pointed out that the
death rate of tuberculosis Is greater
between the ages of 20 and 60, the
period when the Individual Is most
active and economically valuable.
Plans are being worked out for a
special Christmas parsy to be held
by the Rotarlana for the leaa fortu
nate children of this community, and
President C. J. Seman appointed
Oeorge Henselman to .head the com
mittee which will work out details
of this event.
