a canned gooda benefit, as each mem-

reiterated today that "I have noth
ing whatever to retract and will re
tract nothing" In connection with
his statement early this week that
Alfred E. Smith had approached tbe
House of Morgan for a loan In financ
ing the Empire State building.
Father Ooughlln'a reiteration came
In answer to a statement by John J
Rsskob, one of the flnsnclers of the
building, who said all arrangements
for financing had been made before
Smith became connected with the
building, and had asked an apology
from ths priest.
"Not later than an hour ago," said
Coughlln, "I tslksd with the bishop
of the Roman Catholic church, who
accompanied smith on his trip from
the Empire State building to the
House of Morgan at Wall and Broad
streets. The bishop hsd Just read
Raskob's ststement.
" 'Stick to your guns retract noth
ing.' the bishop counselled me. "Noth
ing you said last Sunday was outside
ths facta as they happened in my
presence. Sooner or later Mr. Smith
will come to recall the Incident.'
"Beyond this I do not care to say

The priest had stated In his ad
dress in New York that Smith was

COUNTRY, SAYS CENSUS
Some interesting figures released
from Waahlngton by the department
of commerce, bureau of the census,
show that the pear crop of ths United
States represented 4.8 per cent of the
value of all fruits and nuts , har
vested. The 60 leading pear counties In
the United States are ranked accord
ing to the number of trees of bearing
age. Twenty-two of the counties are
located in California and 11 in New
York. Yakima county, Washington,
leads the list, followed by Sacra
mento, Placer and Santa Clara coun
ties, California, and Jackson county,
Oregon.
Taking fifth place In the nation,
Jackson county showed reports from
1,013 farms with 108,490 trees, not of
bearing age, and 868,314 of bearing
age. From these trees 1,833,183 bush
els of pears were harvested, valued at
13,201 fits.
