In those hectic, feverish days, all trails led to California. The bonanza metal was there and they came from all directions In the quest for It. Each passing year, however, saw more and more gold taken until finally the soli was thought to be panned out. The diggings gradually were abandoned. Only the ghosts of 40 remained. About a hundred miles northeast of Ban Francisco Is a region that held many of these old "dlggln's." But It Is no longer deserted. The "Ghost of "40" have come to life. The hills again are filled with prospectors. The bsnka of the rivers are lined with miners panning and sluicing. The revived region are visited weekly by pleasure seekera and tour lets. Steamboats leave every Friday over the BHme up-river route to Sacra men to that thousands of miners traveled In '40. After leaving Sacramento Vie trail follows the Pony Exprcrw rout to Folsom. lu the early days Folaom was known as "Negro Bar" and fa mous for a river bar about mile long that was rich In gold. LEADER Calls On Prohibitionists to Switch Plan of Attack Education to Have Large Part in Dry Campaign W FDA B. WISE SMITH President National W. O. T. TJ. (Written for the United press.) OHTCAOO. (UP) The repeal of the 18th amendment may look like ine end of tne road to many, but to the W. C. T. U. It simply Is an epi sode in the war sgslnat man's great est and oldeet enemy Intoxicating drink. Prohibition never wsa an end In It self; but rather a method of dealing; with the Uqtior treiflc. The nation had tried every other known method; all failed. We believed prohibition to be the best method; if we can not have prohibition w will try to re duce the evil of liquor to a minimum, by some other method. Start Over Again. We will start all over again in a new and lmprovdo campaign of edu cation. It will be scientific and, Z believe, adequate. But education In alcohol, and Its effect, mut keep step with program. A hundred year ago we could talk about "horrible examples" and show startling chart Indicating the effect of liquor on the human stomach; but educatloml methods have chang ed and progressed. Today we should show what sobriety does for lire; for happiness, accuracy, scholarship, ath letics, etc. Total Abstinence Goal. America, must adopt a. total ab stinence goal; if It adopts a moderate drinking goal the people are lost. All drunkard got their start in moderate drinking. Against public- school temperance education will toe launched an or ganized and skilled propaganda, is favor of moderate drinking; this will be a part of the commercial adver tising of the liquor Interest. I am In favor of curtailing liquor adver tising: it should oe prohibited. It should not be permitted in newspa pers, magazines, billboard, radio, or anywhere else. There will be a part of the people who will oppose the government of any state which 1 tn the liquor busl lness. It 1 that way In Canada. There the liquor msnufacturers are In politic. There 1 a strong dry movement slowly bearing down on tno Canadian liquor systems, trying to reduce the quantity sold. Ftght for Dry Laws. Wherever prohibition law remain, the W. C. T. V. will fight to retain them. W Expect to be opposed by liquor politic. We will try to vote the saloon and the liquor business out of much of the United State we can. On the other hand we expect to see the liquor business try to vote oh liquor business into a much United State territory a it can. The great need of the hour 1 a re vival of civic consciousness.
