and pound, as weU a every penny
that goe Into the family meal. She
probably plana her main dial), not
Juet for today, but for each of the
next aeveral days. The money goea
further when she figures It out that
way down to the number of pounds
of potatoes, tomatoes, beans, greens,
and oMier vegetables, fruit, meats,
milk, bread, and ao on, to see the
Jamlly through the week.
But If you have not been planning
as olosely as that, you may find it
hard to work into your llt all the
foods that are needed to keep the
family well and fit. This la usually
hardeat to do when It comes to vege
tables. As a guide for thle purpose, the
Bureau of Home Economics of the
V. a. Department of Agriculture has
figured out a low-cost vegetable bud
get. If .the family Include father,
mother, and three children under
fourteen vears of aire, the bureau says
you need the following quantities of
these different kinds of vegetables for
a week: 13 pounds of potatoea. e
pounds of tomatoes, 7 pounds of leafy
N green or yellow vegetables, 2 pounds
of dried beans, peas, peanuts, or pea
nut butter. 314 pounds of otaer ves

For a family of five you will prob
ably buy tomatoes In No. 1 cans,
which hold 1 pound. S ounces, net
weight. Five such can would be
enough for seal loped tomatoes one

other day, kidney beans or dried llmas
and tomatoes, or atewed tomatoea a

H4 cup spaghetti broken Into
small piece

5 tablespoon butter or other fat
3 cups milk
1 teaspoon salt
ft pound American cheese
1 quart shredded cabbage
',4 cup buttered bread crumbs
Cook the spaghetti in boiling salted
water for 20 minute, and drain.
Make a sauce of the flour, fat. milk
and salt. Shave up the cheese, sdd
to the hot sauce, and atlr until melt
ed. Put the cabbage, apsghettl and
sauce In a buttered baking dish in
layers and cover the top with the
buttered bread crumbs. Bake for 20
to 30 minutes In a moderate oven,

54 cup top milk
1 tablosrjoon melted butter
Wash and cook the potatoes In thalr
skins. When tender scrape off the
skin and mash the potatoea or force
through a potato rlcer. Mix the milk,
melted buttOT and aalt with th po
tato and beat until light. Pour hot
water over the ralalns, and let them
atand for a few mlnutea until plump
ed: then drain, and add to the eweet
potato. O reuse a baking dish and
pile the potato lightly Into th dish.

through, and brown lightly over the
