PAGE TWO MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1933. 10 SHALL PLAY LTILT T BUGH QUESTION Far Western Situation Badly Jumbled Two In East, One From South Candi dates For New Years. PASADENA, Calif.. Nov. 30 (AP) Two eastern team and one from the outh stood out today as the leading candidates for the Invitation to the annual New Year's day Rose Tourna ment football gome today. At the same time, the far western a tup was in a bad jumble with pros pect that It might be even more mixed up In another week. Army and Princeton of the Atlantic eaboard and Duke in the south, re mained as the eligible undefeated elevens, while Stanford, should It be able to successfully cope with Call for- ' tila Saturday, was favored to carry ; the Pacific coast's banner. Mutter Complicated But there were underlying condi tions which figured to complicate matters. The west would like to have Invited Army last season but was given to understand the offer could sot be accepted. Princeton unbeaten. untied and un scored upon this year, baa an agreement whereby Its season most end with its game with Yale. Either of these teams would be pre ferred over Duke, because of their auperlor schedules, not that Duke would not be acceptable. The west would enjoy very much getting an other crack at Coach Wallace Wade, whose Alabama teams won two games and gained a tie In their other trip tiere for the January first festival, Oregon, the west's last hope so far as sending an unbeaten team into the Rose bowl, was rudely pushed Into defeat by Southern California. Oregon Loes Chance While the Webfoota are not entirely out of the picture, because they can get no less than a tie for the Pacific coast conference title, the 26 to 0 defeat Saturday was too convincing to be overlooked. - In case of a Stanford defeat, South ern California would pop back Into the picture, although Troy trod a troublesome road with Notre Dame, Georgia and Washington still on the schedule. Oregon has St. Mary's to play. California, If It beats Stanford would step back Into the running, and Oregon State could not be com pletely counted out after Its sensa tional victory over Pordham Saturday. The eastern selection, of course, would depend much on the team picked In the west, as the host Insti tution baa sole power In the matter c?
