Crescent City Defeat Puts
Local Squad On Dignity
Two Cripples Back In
Line'Up.
(By Harold Crove)
Rn football will b served with
out trimmings when Marshfield meets
Medford on Van Scoyoc field next
Saturday at 3:00 o'clock.
In reflective mood from the unex
pected defeat at the hand of Cres
cent City, the local squad Is pre
paring to redeem a season that li
still In 1U Infancy. Coach D. K.
Burgher and his men entered Into
a skull conference Monday night to
see if they could Iron out the rough
pots In last Saturday's game. After
the skull practice Burgher held a
short dummy practice. Last Satur
days defeat demonstrates an old
adage In football. No team In the
first "days of practice can meet a
heavier, more experienced team and
win. Contrary to past season cus
tom Crescent City this year waa no
set-up. With a a 10-pound fullback
and a 185-pound line, It was too
much for the local Inexperienced
players to handle.
Medford has been outweighed many
tlmea . in the past and still won
through superior generalship and
knowledge of fundamentals. 8heer
lack of time for adequate practice
prevented these factors from saving
the day Saturday.
Keith Bates, guard, waa pronounc
ed well by the doctor. He has missed
considerable practice but he Is a
hard working boy. He will probably
see action against Marshfield next
Saturday.
Lloyd Hammack, center, another
-cripple who in the Roseburg game
received a torn ligament In his left
knee, will be on hand to try to get
a dish of Marshfield meat Saturday.
TROJANS DEPART
FOR STATE GAME
LOS ANGELES. Oct. 18. (D A
light workout was scheduled for the
University of Southern California
football team today, preparatory to
lis departure for Portland tonight for
Its game there Saturday with the
Beavers of Oregon State.
Coach Howard Jones intends to In
clude his cripple among the 35 who
entrain here tonight, hoping that at
least part of them will be able to
tart against Coach Lonnle Stlner's
eleven.
There was little change In the hos
pital Ust. Homer Ortfflth, Ollff Propat
and Julius Bescos appeared to be
rounding Into condition .again, but
there was doubt that Curtis Youel,
Capt. Ford Palmer and Bob Brsklno
would, get Into Saturday's game, al
though Eraklne promised he would
be able to play.
The Trojans went through a long,
hard workout yesterday, their last be
fore the game, A light drill will be
staged at Sacramento. "
CORVALLIS, Ore., Oct. 18 (AP)
Having developed an unusual passing
attack, Coach Lon Stlner of Oregon
State college Isn't letting It rest
he prepares for the game In Port
land Saturday with the southern Cal
ifornia football eleven.
Early and late the orange squad
has worked on that passing attack
with the idea of getting the ball
over or around the Trojans highly
respected line.
52 STRAIGHT FOR
SEATTLE, Oct. 18. UP) Henry
Woods. 138, sensational Yakima negro
lightweight, helped himself to his
Mnd straight victory last ntght when
he handed Joe Ouerrera, 134. Los An
gles, a 10-round pasting in the main
vent of a boxing show here.
Woods took every round, and it
wasn't until the third stanza that the
southerner landed anything in the
way of a real punch. Ouerrera dem
onstrated an over-supply of gameness.
taking everything the Yakima boy
had to offer, keeping on his feet ami
coming back for more.
In the fifth, Woods connected for
a, quartet of crashing right awlngs
which staggered Ouerrera. and again
In the-last stanza created a leather
hurricane that almost, but not quite,
sank the gamester.

The entire city of Ashland was on
hand to greet the S. O. N S. footbaM
team when It returned from the Mon
mouth game Saturday. The S. O. N.
8. won, 13-7.
Coach Hobson immediately started
to work for the game this Friday
against the O. S. C. Rooks. Although
winning the game In Portland, the
team was ragged on fundamentals,
snd are working overtime to remedy
the apparent weak points. Par from
satisfied with the showing of the team
to date, the squad Is working hard for
the hard games. Twenty-two men
will be taken north Thursday Wr the
clash with th strong O. S. C. fresh
men at Corvallls, Friday.

tackles; Ayers, Robinson, Rasmussen
and Cook, ends; Lancaster, Bradford,

others are yet to be selected.
The team will probably be out
weighed at corvallls, as they have In
every game this year. The S. O. N. 8.
team averages only 176 pounds. It to
hoped that speed and aggressiveness
will overcome thb disadvantage to
carry the team through.

Tonight will settle a lot of talk
when four huskies mix their respect
ive pet holds on one another.
A good deal of Interest Is centered
around the debut of Dr. Napoleon
De Vore, clever French matman, who
is taking on Pete Belcastro In the
one hour opening bout. The doctor,
with his tricky maneuvers will be
contrast with Pete, who generally
mixes haymakers and kicks with his
wrestling.
In the one hour top bout of tne
evenings scramble we will find Harry
Demetral. Chicago Greek, exchanging
holds with none other than tne
tough Canadian who laid Al Karas
Ick among the daisies last week. This
Canadian's name is Jack Kogut and
he seems to know all about the mat
business. Judging from his match
here last week.
The curtain Is scheduled for 8:15,
and the open house policy is still
In vogue.
The Weather.
Oregon: Fair tonight and Thurs
day, but fogs on coast; cooler north
and east portions tonight; moderate
northwest wind offshore.
