It Really Was Colder in Grandpa's Day, Say Records Hinting Mild Winter Coming By r. b. colton (Associated Pre Science Writer) WASHINGTON (AP) When Orendpa tells how the winter were colder and the enowa deeper In his day's lt'a more than Just hazy mem ory. It's a fact. Winters now aren't as cold as they used to be, says J. B. Klncer, clime tologlcal expert of the weather bu reau. In fact, they've been growing warmer for more than 30 years. Mild Winter Probable. "We are now In the midst of a pe riod of sbnormsl warmth," Mr. Kln cer goes on, "which has been coming upon us gradually for yeara." Judging from thla warm trend, be sees another mild winter as probable. Though winters have been growing warmer for many years, they are the moat finicky of the four seasons. A cold winter may pop up unexpectedly in the midst of several warm ones. For example, wherea lsat winter wsa mild In accordance with the trend, the coldeat officially recorded tem perature In United States hlatory was registered In February In Yellowstone National Park 8 degrees below aero. But. regardless of report of wild fowl flying aouth early, of squirrels laying up unusually Isrge stores of nut, and the hair growing thick oil rabbits, the weather bureau pins Its faith to pendulum-like swings of cll mate recorded during the past 100 yesrs, moving first In the warm di rection, then In the cold. Swings Like Pendulum. For example, here'e how the trend" have awung, first to warm.then to cold, at Now Haven, Conn., where weather recorda go back to 1801 : Rising temp. 13 yrs. 1801-1813 Falling temp. 87 yrs. 1818-1849 Rising temp. 15 yrs. 1860-1804 Falling temp. 9 yrs. 1805-1873 Rising temp. 19 yrs. 1874-1893 Falling temp. 30 yra. 1803-1B13 Rising temp. 1913- t I There Is no evidence yet of a swing back toward cold weather. Eighteen of the laat 31 winters at Washington, D. O, have been warmer than normal. All of the last !3 there have been mild.' The warmest winter In more than 100 yeara waa.that of 1031-33. This contrasts, for example, with 19 typical winters of "Grandpa's day" 1854-1878 all of which were colder than normal. That of 1855-68 was the coldest In 100 years of wea ther bureau reeorts. All four eessons have been growing warmer for a long period, records show. 4 Preaches Tonight yt1 " I'll ' IT 370 m -.i Ms$i&tem.jft ywj.iyiiai-T'- spy fx. 36 o 1 1 AVERAGE MEAN TEMPERATURES a I U V rN H H 1 1 1 1 t a7 itaj r .L-A II IVVI I I r" rVTA I I '.r WASHIMGTON.D.C. - g- NEW HAVEN.
