sgslnst formidable opposition from
Washington State's Cougara.
Since 1830 when Washington State
charged into the top rank by win
ning the conference title, the teams
eoached by Orln Holllngbery have
been respected if not feared by the
west' most successful football lead
er, Howsrd Jones of U. S. C.
Cougara Impresa
Washington State's two sppear
ancea to date have resulted In one
Ided wins over light opposition. The
Cougars defeated Whitman. 48-0. and
last Saturday won from College of
Puget Bound, 80-0. Neither game
offered a chance to gauge the true
strength of the northern eleven
Southern California, however, allow
ed real power to take a strong foe
Into oamp last week-end by beating
Loyola, 18-0. The present Loyola
team 1 considered as good.aa last
year's squsd which held U. 8, C. to
a 6-0 win.
While Southern Csllfornla and
Wsshlngton State battle In Los Ang
eles In the week-ends only confer
ence encounter. Stanford and Cali
fornia will take on old time and
worthy gridiron opponents in their
respective "strongholds.
Santa Clara Formidable
Stanford opened It conference
campaign last Saturday with a 8-0
win over the University of California
at Lo Angeles Bruins and Its non

as formidable, if not more so. Two
week ago, Santa Clara upset Cali
fornia 1-0. and with an open date
In between, should be well prepared
for coach "Tiny" Thornhlll's sophomore-manned
squad. On the strength
of II California victory. Santa Clara
Will be favored over Stanford.
Down In the Berkeley Bowl, Cali
fornia will match touchdown drives
with St. Mary's Oaels In the one
.early seaaon game there that annu
ally drawa upwards of 70,000 fans.
Last season St. Mary's went Into the
contest a favorite but California
pulled out with a 13-H tie after hav
ing been beaten two weeks esrller
by Ssnta Clara, 1J-0, The asm sit

fighting Bears are conceded a fairly
even chsnce despite their setback ot
a fortnight ago.
o. S. C. nays Gonac
Oregon State will face Oomwga in
a, clash expected to give further com
psrlson on the relative strength of
the northwest membera of the con

team. It makes three tough
onea In a row. Two weeks sgo it
lost to Washington. 13-0 and laat
Saturday to Oregon, H-0. That
make Waahlngton and Oregon ap
