Pack tightly in small molds and cool Cm crisp lettuce leaves place slices of oold boiled ham, with a mold of the spinach on each side. Garnish with Bread and Butter Pickles and Gold Medal Salad Dressing. Drain and dry. Combine the ce'.ery and green pepper and mix with three tablespoons of Gold Medal Sal ad Dressing. In the middle of each salad plate place a heaping table spoonful of the celery mixture on a lettuce leaf, and garnish with a dash of paprika. Surround with the who'e shrimp. Place three or four small leaves of lettuce around the edge, garnish with the tomato (Jelly cubes or slices) and place sprays of cress between them. At three Intervals equally spaced, and between the to mato cubes put three rounded tea spoons of the Gold Medal Salad Dress ing. (If siloed, tomatoes are used, place the dressing In the center of the slices.) The shrimp and tom:o may be eaten with the dressing and the colors are displayed better than when mixed. (UP) The 7,000 Slvlllan Conservation Corps workers In the Montana district have gained an average of 10 pounds per man aJnoa entering their forest Jobs, of ficials estimate. Each worker has a rations allow ance averaging about 33 cents in cost per day. The total grocery bill for the O. C. O. in the district was esti mated to be $75,000 a month. During July and August alone the workers at 132,000 pounds of beef, 83.000 dozen eggs, 2,000 tons of po tatoes, 200,000 loaves of bread, 60,000 pounds of sugar, 20,000 pounds of coffee, 44.000 pounds of veal, 22,000 pounds of beans, and 64.000 pounds of butter. In the first six months the work ers were In camp 126 mllee of frank furters, 19,800 hams, and 0,000 large sncks of sugar were consumed. Howard, superintendent of pub lic Instruction, stated today and de clared the state should permanently assume a portion of school costs. "So acute la the emergency that Governor Meier has stated that the problem of school relief will be among those he will place before the legislature, In case a special session Is called," Howard aald. Cosh Cut In Half. "Because of tax delinquencies the actual cash avatlable for current school expenses last year was less than half that of the previous year. In spite of heavy budget reductions the amount of outstanding warrants in creased 37 per cent over the previous year in 21 counties that have re ported. "County superintendents) report that warranta Issued in at least o districts this fall will be unsalable. Any district that Is a year or more behind in the payment of lta war rants ! In imminent danger of hav ing to close Its school. May Cut Terms. Unless state funds can be found to meet this emergency, the school terms of approximately 350 districts will be greatly shortened, many them closing before January. A million dollara from atat sources for emergency school relief would prevent a complete collapse of those districts that are In extreme difficulty. It would take four or five times that amount to assure a full school term In every district. Other States Aid. "Beginning with January 1, 1934, the state of Indiana will assume 9600 of the cost of each classroom unit. For the current school year the state of Maryland provided a million and a half dollara in addition to It state school fund. Missouri has raised 93.000.000. In New York 151,000,000 of school costs for the current year will come from state sources. In North Caro lina a minimum term of eight months throughout the atate will be paid for from atate funds and local school dis tricts may continue the term be yond that period. The legislature of the state of Wash, lngton provided a state fund of 10,- 000,000 annually for the schools of the state. A number of other states have taken steps similar to these." Pineapple Surprise Salad 1 package orange gelatine 2 cups canned pineapple Juice 1 cup shredded pineapple 1 cup finely cut raw carrot (S or 4 medium sized carrots) 1 head lettuce 1 cup Best Foods Mayonnaise Dissolve gelatine In the pineapple Juice drained from can of shredded pineapple. When the mixture has hardened somewhat, add the shred ded pineapple and carrots which have been put through the coarse knives of a food chopper. Pour this into large oblong mold so that It may be cut into slices for serving, or fill small molds for Individual portions. (UP) The Oregon Parmers Union, second lAxgesi agri cultural organisation of the atate. looks askance at various NRA codes and also at proposed special legisla tive session. We protest against the method employed and writing the various codes pertaining to agricultural pro ducts, reads a resolution recently passed by the executive committee. Sinister interests are endeavoring to fashion those codes In the Inter est of the distribution agencies with out due regard to the producers. The farmers render a most valuable serv ice to our states and nation and should receive first consideration In writing any code pertaining to agri cultural products. We protest against any sales tax that Is to be borne by the common people. The concentration of wealth is the cancer gnawing at the vitals of our nation and must be broken up The secrecy clause of the present in come tax must be repealed and the brackets raised so those with ability must pay.
