When they leave that one. they become pork. Eight hogs a week are butcher ed at the prison the year around. A meat cooling room la maintained to keep the pork at proper temperatures Forty Cons (lire Milk A considerable proportion of all food used In Salem Institutions Is produced at the prison farm, which consists of 956,35 acres and 400 acres more rented land. A herd of 40 Hoi st eln cowa provldea fresh milk, with butter and other dairy products. The two bulls with the herd are among the best-bred In Oregon. One of them won the championship at the 1032 state fair. Eggs are produced by 2,000 white leghorn hens at modern poultry houses. Young chickens are brought up each year In apeclal brooding de partments. When the hens have pass. ed their laying prime, they make Sunday dinners for Inmatea of Ore- gon's Institutions, A special depart ment for dressing poultry la main talned. A small flock of turkeys la kept for Thanksgiving, Christmas and other special occasions. Vegetables Raised Twenty bones and mulea perform (heir share of the work at the prison farm. Two great barns hold feed and furnl ahshelter for the livestock. A large ahare of vegetables and fruits used by the Institutions are grown at the prison farm. The farm was laid out principally by James Lewis, who became super intendent In 1031. It was formerly occupied by the boys' Industrial acholo. which burned several years ago. It was said here today by Harry L. Hopkins, federal emergency relief ad ministrator. In August, 10.331 families were list ed compared with 30.278 families In the previous month. The elty moved away from the wat erfront and business was not suffi cient to keep the property open. It Is Increased at the rate of 1200 annually. Hourly pay Is based on the actual hours the pilots fly. To compensate the pilots for flying more miles as faster plsnes are developed, thla pay la graduated upward according to the following scale: Speed of Planes Daylight Flight. Op to 125 m.p.h 4.00 per hour Up to 140 m.p.h 4.20 per hour Up to 141 m.p.h 4.40 per hour Up to 158 m.p.h......... 4.80 per hour Up to 178 m.p.h 4.80 per hour A bonua of $2.00 an hour Is given for each hour of night flying. In addition, pilots are given hotel expenses when away from home and the air line pays the premium on the group Insurance taken out for the pilots.- A two weeks' vacation an nually with full base pay Is allowed , Seniority Is recognized by the in crease in annual base pay. Co-pilots receive 8100 per month to atart. and after all months. 8210 per month, and after a year, $228 per month. The policy Is to promote co pilots to first pilots' positions. In announcing the new pay scale. company officials ststed that air pil ots will continue to be the best paid wage earnera In America, and that the new scale with Its high salaries made despite a 31 per cent reduction In airmail pay and In the face of llslng operating costs. Under this scale, pilot will receive approximately $7.50 an hour. Company officials pointed out that this year United has added 85 pilots nd co-pilots as part ot Its expan slon program of flying a large part of It mileage with passenger planes without the benefit of airmail reve nue.
