Sept. 23 (AP) Washington State's Cougars showed flashes of great power as they bowled over Whitman, 48 to 0, In a practice game today. At the end ol the regulation four quarters, the teams went on for two quarters more for practice. The Cougar starters rolled up four touch downs In the opening period with a straight running attack. Coach O. E. Holltngbery used his full Washington State squad, making substitutions by full teams. "Nig" Borleski, veteran Whitman coach, likewise used every man he brought to Pullman. WASHINGTON STADIUM. Seatle, Sept. 23 ( AP) Without uncovering their tricks to a small army of scouts, !t took all the brute power of the University of Washington first team to score a 13 to 0 victory over a cour ageous Qonzaga university football team In the first intercollegiate grid iron tussle In Seattle this season. It was a non-conference contest. The Washington HuskleB kept the . Bulldogs backed up against the goal . line throughout the 69 minutes of play, and spoiled their record of scor ing against 18 consecutive opponents, but It was the gallant blue and white trimmed grtdders from Spokane who made the tilt Interesting for the 4,000 blanketed spectators who braved the raw rainy weather. Washington opened up like It might run away with the ball game when It scored a touchdown In three min utes. The second time the Huskies got their hands on the ball, Art Ahonen, triple-threat halfback hurled a pass straight down the middle of the field, and Orsa Pedersen, subbing for Matt Muczynskl at the other half, cut Into the open, hauled down the pigskin over his left shoulder and romped 10 yards to the goal line. The play was good for 35 yards. But after Paul Sulkosky, fullback, failed in his attempt to score the extra point from placement, the Bull dogs fought off further Husky charges time and again. Only once did Gonzaga reach the 60 yard line on lta own offensive drives but the Bulldogs showed lots of fight and a strong defense. Washington made victory safe in the third when Ole Hanson, substitute-halfback, put his men within scoring distance by running back a punt 23 yards to the Gonzaga 12 yard line, and Ahonen slipped around left end to score standing up on the third play. Mary Brian; Io this musical comedy to make Its T F System of Mighty Roadways Discovered Deep in Yuca tan Peninsula Lead to Coba Once Great City WASHINGTON (AP) A network of mighty roadways, deep in the Jungles of the Yucatan peninsula, where more than a thousand years ago scuffed the feet of the whlp drlven slaves of the ancient Maya civilization, has been rediscovered and trod again by man. Findings in tiiese dense Jungles Indicate that coincident with the construction of highways, that made Rome the greatest ancient road builder, there was a Mayan empire In Yucatan that likewise understood the mixing of mortar and the mili tary and commercial values of great roadways. Sixty-five miles east by south of Chicken Itza, headquarters of the archaeological field staff of the Car negie Institute of Washington, lies Coba, a, Maya metropolis of the pre Columbian days, long since forgotten. That Coba once was a great commer cial center Is seen from the archaeo logical discoveries made there. As all roads once led to Rome, so all roads at one time apparently led to Coba, for the ruins of a number of ancient highways are found branching out In all direction like the spokes of a wheel. One of these, entering the Jungles to the west, was thought to end at Yaxuna, 11 miles south -south west of the Institute's headquarters at Chick en Xtza. Intent on determining this, Ihe expedition, headed by Alfonso Villa, a young schoolmaster of the Yucatan race, entered the dense un dergrowth to the east of Yaxuna, determining to follow the road where ever It led. Nearly 22 miles out of Yaxuna the party came upon a solid stone, cylln drlcally shaped, lying on top of the I Am Electricity! meals, wash with my kind of tools. Thirteen feet long and over two feet in diameter, this five ton stone once was a road-roller. At Intervals the party came upon stone platforms on either side of the causeway, some 16 feet high. These also were badly eroded, but It was believed they may have served as wayside shrines. In dications that walls had been erected directly across the road, apparently to keep out hostile tribes, also were found. TOTALLY DRY BANQUET E EVENT IN PARIS. The late Flore nz Zlegfeld exhausted every angle of his art to make the picture a memorable one. The cost of the picture, originally estimated at a million and a half, was nearer the two-million mark when production was finished. The filming called for 74 changes of scone, many of them taken In such world famous beauty spots as Zlon Nation al park, 612 changes of costume and scenes Including 400 and 500 people. The entire Zlegfeld staff was com bined to the studio staff to make "Whoopee" technically perfect. The finished product became a picture that Is still making screen history. Stage production of "Whoopee' made New York gasp by lta lavish beauty. In the freer medium of motion pic tures, "Whoopee" has outdone even Its stage incarnation. The girls were chosen wlt.h the same personal selec tion that Zlegfeld used In assembling beauties for his famous "Follies" and several of the famous Zlegfeld glori fied beauties are In the picture. There are several song hits In the production, the most popular of which Is undoubtedly "Makln' Whoopee." And to top It all, the entire picture was filmed In techni color. An oblong silt cut in the barrel top will give Chllds and O'Donnell a chance to watch the sleeping bea.r they hope to capture. They will seek to learn whether yearling bears feed or nurse during the hlberating pe riod; whether they sleep soundly at all times, or have wakeful moments; whether their respiratory organs func tion normally; and whether their cir culation, temperature, heart beats and general disposition shows much change during the long nap.
