(AP) Dr. Annie Besant, who waa known ! throughout the world for her leader ship In theosophlcal activities, died here today. On October I she would have been 80 years old. The peacefulnees of her last few days was In vivid contrast to the storm of her life. She was In a atate of haf-conscousneas for some time, never speaking at length even to her moat Intimate friends. Dr. Besant had no malady except old age. She was mentally and physi cally worn out. In 1031 she suffered a fall from which she never recovered. On that occasion she was unconscious thirty hours and, according to a theosophlst friend, an Inner group of the elect nat In a circle about her and restored her to consciousness by concentrated transference of power from them selves to her. Many theosophists expressed the opinion that her Inst daya were marred by a disappointment In Jeddu Krlshnamurtl, a Hindu in whom Dr. Besant said at one time, the "rein carnation of Christ" would be made manifest. Subsequently Krlshnamurtl announced that he no longer held with the tenets of Dr. Besant'i re ligion. Numerous of her followers said, however, that she had felt no great disappointment, and that the personal regard between Krlshnamurtl and her self never waned. In the latter part of 1033, after Krlshnsmurtl had renounced the special claims of "mastership which Dr. Besant had made for him, he spent two months with her at Adyar. They sat for hours, dsy after day In silence. The destiny of theosophy, and who Is to succeed Dr. Besant, are ques tions much to the fore as a result of her death. Many persona had expected that Krlshnsmurtl would assume the lead ership, but that Idea was abandoned when he renounced his "mastership." Jlnnarajah Dasaa, vice-president of the theosophlcal society, la mentioned sa a possible successor. -f- CAUSE OF FORES! FIRES PUZZLE TO STATE FORESTER SALEM. Bept. SO. (AP) Analysis of a pecullsr oil or phosphorous form ation with low Ignition point, which caused several small fires near Bend recently, apparently set off by the sun's rays. Is being sought by Lynn Cronemlller, state foreawr. (Samples of the formation war sent him by L. A. W. Nixon, stat forestry flsld Inspector at Bend. Nixon's report stated ha found a smsll fir burning In the middle of th grsvel rosd at Sisters on Septem ber B. Th fir wss about th els of a half-dollar piece, and the flame of bluish color, was from one to two Inches In height and gave an odor aa of a burning match. Within 10 mln utea a half doun flrea were burning within a radius of 30 feet from what sppesrt d out of small oil spots. It wss learned, however, that the day before, following the passing of a large red alrplan toward Mt. Cronemlller believed th plan, had dropped or lost portions of rockets or smoke bombs to be used In the sesreh, and that the high content of phosphorous csused the sun to lgnlt the particles, even In a graveled rond. No further Investigation has yet been made. Cronemlller stated no forest fires In that vicinity had been started, snd he wss ansloua to learn what material from i plan could have started these peculiar small fires.
