i PXGE EIGHT 5EEDF0RD MAIL" TRTBTJNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1933. 3 7u- MIDDEN DOOR BY FRANK L. PACKARD Chapter FRIENDS MEET ir HAT'S up your sleeve?" da manded Sergeant Mulvey. ffon've been thinking this oxer." Yes." laid Colin with a dry lauih. Ire bees thinking It over. In lact lve mapped out a Uttle plan. What I suggest Is that yon and 1 get Into old Keppelsteln's house on the quiet tonight, say around ten o'olook." 'Ton can leave that end of It to me, as far as that goes," asserted Sergeant Mnlvey complacently. You think Keppelsteln Is" "No; I don't," Colin Interrupted calmly. "I don't think anything about him, except that he's In on this up to bis neck. He may even be the Mask himself for all I know. In cidentally, It wouldn't be a bad Idea to Snd out what yon can about him this afternoon." "I wasn't overlooking that bet," stated Sergeant Mulvey with a hard smile. "I'll have a line on him all right. But what are yon and I doing In his bouse at ton o'clock tonight?" "To use the same tense," ex plained Colin composedly, "we are waiting for the raid on the tobacco shop end of the Wine Press that you are staging at about the same hour. "What!" Sergeant Mulvey pulled days," returned Sergeant Mulvey grimly. "Does that lane run all the way between the cross streets?" "I don't know," Colin answered. "I suppose so. It would hardly be confined to the rear of the Wine Press." Sergeant Mulvey got up. "I got a lot to dol" he said with a crooked grin. "You stay put here. Have your meal sent up. I may want to get In touch with yon. Any way, I'll meet yon on the corner a block east of the Wine Press at nine-thirty tonight" "It'll be a long time to waltl" said Colin. IT proved to be. Colln's philosophy was not proof against the Impa tience and anxiety Induced by the one question that, with its ramifica tions, was never out of his mind as the hours, unrelieved even by any word from Sergeant Mnlvey, went by. Would tonight see Clarkie Lnnn but a nightmare phantom of the past, and Colin Hewitt, with all that meant, but most of all Qermalne now, free to resume his normal lite again, or? There was always that fateful "or." Bnt the hours passed eventually and evening came. It was misty, raining a little, the street lamps throwing only a murky "Stay put here," Mulvey told Colin. himself sharply forward by the arms of his chair. "Come again, please!" "Yes, that's the Idea," said Colin patiently. "That's it exactly. Have yon forgotten that Buck O'Mara Is handing out a little out to those three skippers of Helmle Schwann In Barney's parlor tonight?" "No," said Sergeant Mulvey gruf fly, "I haven't forgotten It, and that's why I'm wondering If you're gone erary." "TyELL," he said, "any old reason for the raid will do except the real one. You can figure that out to suit yourself. The main thing Is that we know Buck will be there at ten o'clock. "So now get this, Tim and get It right! It's a certainty that Buck O'Mara and Helmle Schwann, and God knows how many more of the big shots that the Mask keeps on bis payroll, all communicate with the Mask on old Koppelsteln's side of the wall by using that trick door. If he Is afraid the whole place Is going .o be pinched he's going to make a bolt through that hidden door and wise up the Mask and we'll be waiting there to see how he does It" "That doesn't sound so bad," Mul vey admitted. "But suppose nothing happens? Suppose Buck O'Mara Just walks In and then walks out of old Keppelsteln's front door? The game's up, ain't It? With the scare thrown Into them, there's a To Rent' sign going up there on the Wine Press Just the same, ain't there? And then what?" "Something will happen," de clared Colin confidently. "If It doesn't It will be Just too bad for Clarkie Lunn, bocauao then he'll bare to sit In for another hand and trait along with Buck O'Mara again to pick up the broken pieces. And that brings to mind one sweetly sol emn thought Clarkie Lunn lent looking for any publicity, or ere an Introduction to any of your myrmidons." "I ain't buying anr flowers these glow, as he Joined Sergeant Mnlvey at the appointed hour and place. "All set Tim?" he asked the lone figure he found waiting on the cor ner. "I suppose It is. of course, or I'd have heard from you." ' "Sure It Is," Sergeant Mulvey an swered easily. "Likewise we're In luck. The first part of It's a cinch. We worked the peddler dodge and one or two others, Keppelsteln ain't home and nobody's gone In or come out. since we put the spot on the house around noontime. . ' "One of the boys, who's pratty nifty at that sort of thing, got to work on the back-door lock after dark. Some lock, he says. Bnt he got away with It so It'll look like it had never been touched If we want to lock It again. All we get to do Is to walk In. As for tbe rut I dunno!" Colin had shaken off the depres sion of the afternoon. "It can't go wrong," he said deci sively. "It's the one sure play that Buck O'Mara will make." "Well, I'm counting on It too, ain't I?" returned Sergeant Mulvey grim ly. "What do you think I've got half the New fork police force picketed around here for? To give me tbe laugh?" And then, abruptly, as they moved awr.y: "Say, Benny Malone had the wrong dope on this Keppelsteln bird In more ways than one. He ain't here a lot of the time like tonight We got some check-ups on blm to day. Sometimes he ain't seen around here for a week or maybe a month at a stretch." "I shouldn't be surprised," said Colin quietly. "What do you mean, you shouldn't be surprised?" demanded Sergeojit Mulvey In sudden suspicion. "You holding something out on me?" "No," replied Colin simply, "you know all I know. I mean I wouldn't be surprised at anything that went on here and I shan't be no mortal what happens." CCopirtoM, IJlit, rranft a.
