1 The commercial value of a life

son over 40 years of age who continu
ously loads up the body with the
waste products of nitrogenous foods
in excess, even if he had the best
food In youth. Fruits and cereal foods
should be largely and generally used
by all persons over 40 yeara of age.
5. Nerves are exceedingly Import
ant. They grow best In the country.
Let youth be passed as much aa pos
sible away from the crowded centers
of population.
6. Education may be misdirected,
and may be overdone. A good ma
chine may be ruined by making it too
elaborate. A good knife may be ren
dered useless by sharpening It all
away.
7. Regular, moderate, physical exer
cise Is essential, and Is generally ne
glected. 8. Do not make a burden of amuse
ments. They may, and. often are,
made worse than overwork or undue
worry.

life. It results In disappointment,

10. Cultivate a serene mental atti
tude, and develop a capacity for de
liberate enjoyment of whatever Is at
hand. The greatest pleasure often

work, overplay, overeat, overdrink,
oversmoke, or allow yourself to be
come overlnactlve.
12. Do not assume obligations that
you can not discharge. This Is the
secret not only of much physical, but
of much moral and mental disaster.
13. Study your diet, and your hours
of labor, sleep, and relaxation, and
conform to your constitutional re
quirements. 14. Take particular precaution to
preserve by dally actions the elasti
city of all the tissues.
15. Maintain self-respect, avoid sor
dldness and gloom and "grow old
gracefully." s
16. It Is desirable to diversify your
Interests. Have one or two restful di
versions, using a portion of your time
away from your regular occupation

Vegetable Salads,
1 2 e. lima beans :
1 c. diced celery
2 tomatoes, quartered
1 t. salt.
Serve with mayonnaise dressing
and garnish with deviled gs cut in
quarters.
2 214 c. shredded cabbage
Va c. green pepper, finely chopped
Vi o. diced celery
Va o- pimlento, finely chopped
2 T. minced onion
Serve with mayonnaise and garnish

3 2 c. shredded cabbage
1 o grated raw carrot
I cucumber, sliced thin
14 o. diced celery
Serve with cooked ' dressing asd
garnish with tomatoes.

2 T. minced onion

8 hard-coked eggs, sliced

Molded Salads.
1 cucumber, thinly sliced .
2 e. fresh fruits
I pkg. lime Jelly-powder
1 0. boiling water
1 0. cold water.
Dissolve the powder In the boiling
wster then add the cold water and
chll slightly; add the cucumber and
fruit and pour Into wet mold. Serve
with mayonnaise on lettuce and gar
nlah with ripe olives or little balls of
cheese.
3 1 pkg. lime jelly powder
14 . boiling water
Ya 0. vinegar
& t. salt
1 . cooked ham, finely chopped
c. diced calarye
1 T. minced onion
2 sweet pickles, flnel chopped.
Dissolve powder in boiling water,
add vinegar and aalt, then chill
slightly; fold In ham, celery, onion
and pieties and turn into a wet loaf
pan. Chill until firm. Oarnlsh with
parsley.
32 T. gelatin
4 T. cold water
1 med. can crushed pineapple
1 large cucumber, thinly sliced
4 T. lemon juice ,
1-8 . sugar
1 e. boiling water.
Dissolve the gelatin In cold water;
dissolve the sugar in the boiling
water, then combine all. Pour Into
wet mold and chill. Serve with may
onnaise thinned with cream and gar
nish with strips of pimlento.
"Btducer's Mayonnaise.
1H c. mineral oil
3 $ yolks
4 T. lemon juice
4 t. sugar
!i t. salt
Vi t. mustard.
Add seasonings to yolks and beat
until thick, add one tespoon of oil
at a time and beat until thick, then
add oil more freely. Then with lemon
Juice It necessary. (The white may
be beaten stiff and folded in last tS
desired.)

rora were committed In the Washing
ton county jail here yesterday to
serve sentences of 10 months each
and serve out fines of $750 Imposed
In federal court in Portland. They
were convicted of using the mails to
defraud In operation of a mortgage
company. The court stipulated no
particular jail In which sentence
should be served, and the two se
lected Washington county.
MACHADO THREATENED
"IN NASSAU RETREAT
A substantial Increase In lte ap
propriation for 1033 advertising has
been decided upon by Shell OH com
pany, following the outstanding suc
cess attending the first alx weeks'
campaign for Super Shell gasoline.
This brings the current year's ap
propriation to a figure considerably
greater than the expenditure in 1932.
when the company announced its
conviction that extensive advertising
and aggressive salesmanship would
facilitate a return of normal business
conditions.
The bulk of the additional expend
itures will go to western newspapers,
the list having been Increased to 215
papers from 102 in which the open
ing advertisements of the campaign
were carried on July 1. Additional
space will be used in those already
on the schedule. The sales drive, or
iginally confined to California. Ore
gon, Washington. Hawaii and British
Columbia, has been extended to In
clude Montana, Idaho, Nevada and
ArlBona, in which states 86 papera
will carry the advertising. At the
same time, 77 papera have been add
ed in the other western states, chief

papers now being placed in the list 1
