One-Man Business Is Tough Nut to Crack for Recovery Drive General By BABBY FEROCSOK, i rnlted Prees staff Correspondent. WASHINGTON. Aug. S. (DP) Just as tli temperature u boiling up above S today and the humidity was soaring like Protessor Plccard on a clear day. eomebody atepped up to General Hugh B. Johnson and Inno eentiy Inquired how a businessman who doesn't employ anyobdy waa go ing to reduce working houra of bla employees. That threw the whole national re covery program Into ohaos. There hasn't been so much eidtement down there since the day when a lumberman called up and actually got to talk to Johnson after waiting only 39 minutes and being discon nected four tlmea. Well, the NRA went Into confemce on the qeustlon of whether Dominie Tuterwlla, who playa the dual role of employer end employe at his fruit stand, should apply himself for a raise la pay and ehorter hours and get a blue eagle, or should he be de prived of a blue eagle and allowed to pursue an untrammeled course of nigged Individualism and vote the straight Republican- ticket In 1030. Out of that NRA conference came the answerclear cut and definite. It was: "Yea. and again. Ho." Re wUl be allowed to display the blue eagle, but he will not be allowed to change the "We Do Our Part" to "I'M Doing My Part." That's simple enough, but on the tangled question pf ethics the NBA waa strangly silent. Obviously, if Mr. Tuterwlla, doesn't raise bis own pay be will not be doing his psrt It Is equally obvious that the only way he can raise his pay Is ao Issue an order to himself to work longer hours. But he has signed an agree ment with President Roosevelt to work shorter houra and not to re duce salarlea. It was suggested that a happy so lution for Mr. Tuterwlla would be to raise the price of an apple from 6 cents to 6 cents. Then, you see, he could work shorter houra and pay himself a larger salary. Right there, thougn, somebody called attention to section nine of the president's re employment agreement which for bids 1-icreaslng the price of any mer chandise "more than Is made neces ssry by replacement or Invoice costs of merchandise." Apples selling at a cents each would promptly convert Mr. Tuterwlla Into a profiteer, and you better smile w.hen you call any body that, pardner. Maybe we might as well forget the whole business. T IN IRK OFC-C I. R. Kline Says Stronger Bond Between City And Rural Areas Woven By Great Get-together Pionlo. "As human happiness depends up on Individual prosperity, It becomes the loyal and patrlotlo duty of every ettlaen and every organisation to co operate with the Medford Chamber f Commerce, which la striving dili gently at this time to make Presi dent Roosevelt's National Recovery Act effective." fluch was the message brought to more than 3000 farmers, entertained here yesterday by Medford merchants at the plcnle in the city park, when 2. R. Kline, master of the Pomona Orange, expressed the sincere thanks and appreciation of the residents of the rural dletrlots, invited to the very successful affair. Appreciate Effort. "Having met here today as guests of the Medford Chamber of Com merce to partake of this grand and delicious barbecue luncheon and re freshments, we keenly appreciate the huge undertaking of the Chamber of Commerce of satisfying the appetites of several thoussnd hungry farmers," Mr. Kline declared. "True to repu tation for doing things worthwhile, the Chamber of Commerce has msde the festivities of the day a grand success." "We hope that from this event may emanate a stronger friendship and a stronger spirit of cooperation be tween the resldenta of this city and those of every community In south ern Oregon." Mr. Kline continued. "Time will not permit the enumer ation of the many achievements of our local chamber, and the valuable services given the farmers, dairymen and orchardlsts of this county. But those who have resided here for some time are aware of the fact that had It not been for this wonderful and powerful organisation, we would not at this time enjoy the many Improve ments and developments of this beautiful city and valley. Punllo Support Needed. "No organization etn succeed un less every unit functions properly and is supported by the public. "Government cannot function suc cessfully and satisfactorily unless every branch of Industry and trade receive their Just and proportionate share of prosperity. "Having experienced one of the! most severe end destructive financial panics of all time, we are entering into an era of recovery and recon struction. This means that many concessions and readjustments must be made. Particularly with reducing unemployment, and la Increasing the purchasing power of our country to where it will be on a parity with production. riedged to Welfare. "In conclusion, let me eay that the Orange Is pledged to fire its undi vided support to all questions of vital Importance which tend to promote the welfare of our country and man kind. Again I thank the Medford Chamber of Commerce and all who have assisted In making this day one long to be remembered. We hope that In the near future the oppor tunity will come when we msy re turn some of the courtesies shown us today." Among others contributing to yes terday afternoon's very successful program, presented: by Pomona Orange In the park, were the Rogue River Cowboys, who were accidentally cllnv Inated from yesterday's announce ment of the program. They played for 30 minutes and their numbers were much enjoyed. They represent the Eagle Point Orange. Meteorological Report August 8, 11)33. Forecasts.
