Relied INDUSTRY TALKING UNANIMOUS FRONT AGAINST UNIONISM (Continued from Paga One) are tons of sand waiting to bury smart babies who try to horn In without right. The off-stag story of what In spired these regulations 1 Interest ing. The Washington correspondent of a prominent southern newspaper hi been trying for some day to get his sheet to sign a code. HI argument was that because the publisher Is now away holding very high gov ernment pot It would be good pay' chology for the psper to be among the first on the bandwagon. While the queatlon wu being de. bated In the home ahop mats were made of the NRA eagle. One night the Washington correspondent got a query from his office. It seems thst some smaller papers In the state wanted the mats. They could be sold. How about It? The man went down to headquarters and put the question. The answer waa certainly not. The regulation! followed, Diffusion of the money spent on President Roosevelt's forest army is tremendous. Headquarters of the Civilian Con servation Corps Is preparing statistics to prove this. They won't be ready for nearly a month but you'll be surprised when you see them. Here's an indication of what to1 expect. It comes from the first state to report Kansas: There are 8.693 men In the Kansas O. C. C. They make a total of 3.833 allotment to members of their families, (in some cases a man has money sent to twp dependents.) The number of dependent In the families who get thla relet from an emergency forester's pay total 16. 694. The money thus sent aggregates 47,B44- a month. What this mean In business turn' over doesn't show in the figure. Secretary of Interior Ickea is deaf In one ear. He finds It very helpful In administering public works and listening to Job hunters. Instead of using a small private office, he sits In a huge room, His Immediate caller alts at his desk Those waiting their turn occupy chairs further down the room. When a vlaltor'a errand smells of the pork barrel, Ickea oupa hla bad ar and asks that things be repeated I In louder tones of voice. Finally the visitor la telling hla business to the whole room. One senator who got this treatment left with the some what Irritated comment that ha did not care much (or "holding a eoo ference In a Child, restaurant." What you might call slightly deaf, but certainly not dumb. Some business group, ar. trying to convert the Blanket Code Into a patchwork quilt tailored to their own order. They claim It doesn't fit snug aa la and leavea them exposed to chilling draft.. Take the New TorkTianks for In stance. They went In on th. cod. because they don't wlah to give any body th. Impression least of all Washington that they ar. high-hatting th. Blu. Hawk. But they lament to th. skies In private that they cannot guarantee heir employee a 40-hour week. It a clerk', book, aren't balanced at quit ting time th clerk must stay till they arecode or no code. And they say they cannot pay ov.rtlm. for auch work. Otherwise, no clerk's book, would balance until far Into the night. Some department, in th. larger banka ar absurdly under-staffed. The foreign department of one of th. biggest rarely goea home before 9 p. m. and sometimes later. Plenty of new Joba can be crested by a ra vision of such condition., according to th. code. Then there are th. utilities. Like the banka they want to stand up and be counted. Their main worry la whether their operating staffs come under th. head of me chanical worker, or service employes. The former rate a SS-hour week and the latter a 40. Utility men are plaintively taut prl rately inquiring just how they are supposed to msk. up the seditions! cost Involved In accepting th. code Industrial corporation, ar. allowed to add It to th. prlc. of their prod uct. But th. utilities ar. not kid ding themselves that a rat. increase will be permitted. They do hop. o use the cod. aa a lever to kill off agitation for rat reductions. They will be welj pleased on th. Inald. if they can gain that much ground. Also there ar. th railroad.. Their present plan la tb sit out th. party. Nobody hu asked them to play, and that may be that. New York get Inald. information that th. railway brotherhood, will make no fuse. All hands will atlck by th. current agreement until the f rst of the year and then th real fireworks will begin. Th Federal Reserve board didn't atreas Its latest figure taut they ar Impreaalv. They show that .bual nea (activity hu to gain T per cent to get back to th 1034-38 normal But employment would hav to gain by 49 per cent and payroll lay 134 per cent over their present level to recover to th earn normal. That's th purchasing power story In a nut shell. A New York authority hu worked It out on th bails of thes. statistic, thst If buslnesa wer. allowed to re vert to normal without an effort to stlmulat purchulng powr w. would hav. a permanent unemployment roll of mora than , 000.000 people. The tact have begun to sink Id deeply among the Industrial and financial blg-ttmers. They account for a remarkable chane of attitude in the last two week. You find very few left who still maintain that na ture should be allowed to take It course. DOPE A New Yorker comment that our ailment ha been absence of N1R-UU. What's the remedy? Code-In. Maybe F. D. R. will be the her-ln beside. Anyway, the smart lad saya the answer la dope la some form. Meteorological Report August 1, 1931. Forecasts.
