Hamilton Patton, member of the
committee of the chamber of com
mere, which worked out the plans
for the sewer bond Issue which citi
zens will vote next Friday, In an in
terview this morning made the fol
lowing statement:
"The Chamber of Commerce had
three things in mind in developing
tnrough Its public works committee
the suggested scheme to the city
council for the bond issue on the
sewage disposal plant which is to be
voted on Friday.
"In line with the deal res of the
president and oongoess in working out
a better schame of taking care of un
employment than the dole system,
which has been customary in recent
months ajid hfu been severely critl
c.red, the directors have already en
tered upon a public works program
All heads of relief work believe that
inasmuch as money must be spent
for unemployment relief, something
definitely constructive should be the
lesult of the expenditure. This pro
ject will put men to work and get
something for the money spent. This
Is especially true since 130.000 of the
sum will be an outright donation
from the government.
"Last year the city lost certain law
suits and paid damages, due to the
condition of the sewage disposal sys
tem now used These damage suits
will continue and the amounts award
td will Increase considerably, causing
a greater cash outlay than the an
nual bond retirement schedule necessary.
"No one who has any Interest In
Lvlng in a healthy community can
consider our present disposal sys
tem satisfactory. This reason alone
should necessitate the voting of the
bonds.
"The committee wished to work out
a scheme that would not raise cur
rent expenditures of the people pay
ing the retirement schedule called
for This was done through the co
oper at ion of the water department
and the city council, which has al-
:rady been explained. The combined
monthly charge for the water and the
retirement of the sewage bonds will
henceforth be Identical with the
present water rate. If the people vote
the bonds. The cost of the plant is
;n line with today's price, and the
people are asked to vote an issue of
between one-quarter and one-third of
what was suggested in the last elec
tion when placed before them fur
ti.elr consideration. The chamber of
commerce suggests that everyone get
cut and vote on Friday and support
the measure.'

STREAMS' PURITY
Cities havn no more right to pol
lute the streams of the nation than
to poison the public highways; and
Jn the great Oregon country rivers
trust be made pure, that wild life,
the state's greatest asset, may be
conserved was the message brought
to Medford last night by W. L. Pin
ley, naturalist of nationwide reputa
tion, who accompanied the Portland
cn amber of commerce goodwill tour
to southern Oregon.
Urging citizens of Medford to vote
tor the bond issue Friday, which will
make poslble a new sewage system,
eliminating the pollution now going
down Bear creek Into the famous
,Fogue, Mr. Flnley reviewed in inspir
ing words the history of the Oregon
country.
Thank heavens, we're going to :
clean up the Willamette," he declar-
ed, referring to the bond Issue for a I
rew sewage system, recently passed !
by a two to one vote In Portland.
"I hope thac you will take the same i
action for the good of one of the moat I
wonderful streams In the world. Rogue '
River.
"If you do not," Mr. Flnley contln- !
ued, -you will destroy the fish life, j
your greatest aset. Streams must be j
pure or tourists will not come to the
great playground of the Pacific north- 1
west. To Oregon's great outdoors. I ;
hope that your measure passes." I
Damage to the state's recreational (
possibilities resulting from the drain- .
)ng of the Klamath swamps was re
viewed by the naturalist, who de
clared, "we are reaching a point in
education today, where we realize
that a swamp may be of more value
to the state than Increased agricul
tural lands. We muot get the water
back into these places to preserve our
vild fowl. The duck and geese, who
used to blacken the skies, flying Into i
the favorite haunts and watering ,
places, now have no place to go."
hi his address, Mr. Hanley took his
audience from the land of the KodUk j
bar to the horn of the southern !
Oregon steelhesd, spicing his address1
with clever stories. And emphasizing !
throughout his talk the need for con- i
serration of fish and game In Ore- j
gon and preservation of her play-1
g-ound, whatever the cost, maintain-!
mi, that the world is looking, today,
for a place where the natural things
life have not been destroyed. A
place to fish and hunt and play.
