Jovlte, Province of Quebec, , Canads, July 18. To the Editor: Don and I are about 75 mile north of Montreal today, and Intend to be that much more before ntght-fall. The old Dodge has run perfectly U the way, and w haven't had a bit of trouble. The night tht I wrot th last letter we left at on o'clock, and drove about 50 mile out of the city, and camped on a llttl tide-road on a private estate owned by some wo msn In Paris. France. Th cr Is fixed up for bed. nd a we weren't bothered, we lept till noon. We drove about hundred mile tht day, stopping oft en route to go swimming In river along th rod. There was a nlc big canoe there, e w appro- prlsted It for a couple of hour. Don claimed that he never sun-burned, He did that time. He looked Ilk an Indian blanket the next day. I did a little better, In that I KNEW I sunburned, so I stayed out of the sun most of the time. We're both getting nicely tanned now. Farmer Relents. A evenlrrg drew on we again looked for a place to camp, and on t little side rosd we found a good secluded place and started our fire for supper. Just as the coffee was beginning to boll the farmer who owned the placo drove by In a wagon nd told us to be on our wsy. W had to repack all our stuff, and Just as we drove baok onto th road he and hi hired man came up. They td thy hated to ehau us out, but that they were afraid of fire, but that we could camp In their dooryard. We accepted this offer. K brought out an oil tov for us to cook on, and then changed hi mind and Invited u In to do our cooking In th kitchen. When our supper had been cooked end devoured, we sst and talked to the farmer ana hi wife for an hour or so, sod by that tlrn we had been Invited to sleep In the house. The next morning they also Invited u to breekfast with them, end then showed us about the farm, Their name was Oonyo, nd they mentioned that th French spelling was Gsgnon. Maybe they're som relation to Joe Oagnon In Medford, although they didn't know. Mr. Oagnon showed u how to fry ham In water to get the salt out ot It. W'd hav had to throw It away otherwise, aee. It waa terrible, I've seen Mom doing the asm thing, but didn't know why. We're getting to be quit famous cook now. This morning we had hot.cakes. We burn the first several! some wer prtty good, and th rest of th bsttor we threw away. Th Jm waa swell, how. .ever. I wish we had Fred (Simeon Gunch) Cqlvlg her to cook for us. He make swell biscuit and things. Get him to cook things for you some day. I used to go down and look hungrily at his hot bread Just out of the oven, and waste a lot of good hlnta on how good It looked. He'd Just say that tliey couldn't out It 'till supper time. In such a decisive voice, too, that I Just didn't hav the nerve to ask why not. I've eaten Cross-Word Puzzie form 11 Gymnaitla awing 11 To a poalttoa on II. Coma togalhat It. To get back to this drivel about th trip. At th border they took all our cigarettes away htda five package each and th ones they oouldn't find. They asked us If w had any ditched In th ult-ca, and w said ''no," which waa correct. They then asked If then wer any under the seat, snd sgaln w said "no They asked about th bed olothea a a hiding plac. and th tool boa. Th snswer wa alway "no," but If thsy d said hidden In the sugar and beans they'd hare had list Wearing Csntourug. we're letting our beard grow, snd wc look Ilk th deril. That' th only way to describe It. Neat week they ought to look pretty good. On the way up we stopped and went In swimming In Lak Chsmplaln. The water was much warmer than w ex pected, probebly becaus th whisker kept our faces warm. When w got to Montreal, city of nearly a million, we saw th funniest looking cops we've seen yet, and that's saying mor than you perhaps realize. They wear silly looking whit hslmeu. and bawl you out In French. It seems that nearly all the people around her speak that language. Th street sig nals are In both English and rrencn. but up her It 1 Just French. This llttl village of St. Joilt is th most InUreatlng one I'v ever seen. It a a sleepy llttl. burg about th site of Jacksonville, and dtd hav a tough time trying to get th typewriter I'm using. Only t few people in the place speak English. Th rest Just gibber when you try to talk to them, Til two or three who speak th King's English work In th hotel and' the tervlc station This Is th service station tool I'm using now. I think It need 8 new carburetor. Mayb. Mr. Blerma ot ttn Medford Typewrite rxctiange could make It work properly, but It would require years of effort. All these llttl village have besu tlful churches. They are built of gray ssnastone. with elate roofs, and the roofs glint Ilka gold In the sun The Cathollo population seems to be very religious. Tiny roadside shrines nre to be seen on the crest of every hill, and In the evening you aee the whole town on their way to or from services In the churches. No matter how delapidated the home may be, the church Is always lovely. It's hardly believable that we are only a dny'j drlv from th United States. The customs and everything seem so foreign to us. This part ot the trip has been the moat successful of all, so far. Except that It I going to cost me 18 cents to send this itory to Medford by air mall. That's Just twice th. domestle rat. The country roads that w are now traveling are lined with two-wheeled carta of the "old country," and some are eo heavily laden they look a the slightest shifting of th weight would pick th. poor old hors. right up off Ita pins. Many of th. people ride bicycles, snd great many drive horses, buggies and coaches. It's Just though th ealandar had been turned back 38 year, except for the oecaslonal car you set. Most of the care are of American make, besides few English Austin and Rolls- Royces. The Austin are both of the familiar "American" Austin sire, and one I've never seen before, about the like of a Chevrolet. Tour Without Trouble. The small on would b. th most appropriate sire tor this country though. Oa In Canada cost 80 oant a gallon, although you get nearly flva quarts to the "Imperial" gallon. And oil la 40 cents a quart. Alio from that wa can't understand why mora Americans don't mak thl trla. It ha all th thrill af visit to a for eign country, without th. pain In the neck which somes with associating with steamship companies. Another funny thing about thl country. On must hsve Keen, to operate radio receiving set. And American clgarettea, wher you can buy them at 'all, eoat Sao package. The Csnsdian ons sr not bad, al though thsy. toe, ar. rather expen sive. Th most popular brand are Winchester, Oulnl Oold, Buckingham, Flayers, and a host of others, taint Furnish Nam. Most of th vlllagee ar named after a saint. In tact, all of them that w'v gon through sine leaving Montreal ar. It, Martin, Bt. There, t, Auguitln. St. Jarom. Bt. Adele, St. Agsth des Monte, Bt. Faustln, and then Bt. Jovlt. Just follow those vllltg next tint your in Canada, and you'll b right hers, nd you'll Ilk It. Mom Is sor. at m.
