PORTLAND, Ore.. July 31. (AP)
Strength of the butter trade was
suggested In operations on the open
market for both prints and cubes.
The late cut In the price on first
cubes waa not suggested on the open
market where all scores were held
firm Irrespective of the price shown
on the produce exchange.
Premiums over the exchange price
list continued' to be offered and paid
for cubes on the open market, while
under national conditions the price
on the open market waa Vie lb. be
low the exchange list.
Butterfat continued firm.
Market for epgs showed general
steadiness locally for top grade stuff
during the day but aome weakness
was suggested In spots for storage
and undergradea. Much storage stock
waa being offered as fresh goods.
Chicken market remains very slow
but without quotable price changes
for the day.
Considerable excitement was show
ing In the market for berriea as a
result of the sudden and liberal In
crease In demand and Inadequate
supply. Loganberries and raspberries
were chiefly affected.
There was an acute shortage of
apricots In the trade and prices on
Callfornlan and Yakima stock were
firm to higher.

sessions which culminated yesterday
In tht worst price collapse In many

Following the action of the Chi
cago board of trade In suspending
dealings for the day, Kansaa City.
Minneapolis, St. Louis and Dulutb
were quick to fall In Una and take a
holiday. When trading la resumed
tomorrow there win be limit on
dally fluctuations.
The action, taken by director! of
the Chicago board of trad late last
night caused but little surprise. The
reason given for the suspension or
trading wa that tired employes
needed aome rest, but veteran ob
servers saw It aa a means of checking
the frensy which characterized
transactions late yesterday.
