Chapter J5 THE WRONG BOX HB m itarlng straight In boot of him, hit mouth let In llnei of pain; then he aald slowly, "We're both In the wrong box, Georgle, you and I, but we might help each other bjr being friends, don't you think?" She did not apeak, and he went on. "When your mother wanted you to come here, I thought It would be a great nuisance. I'm not used to young people about me. Perhaps you will think It odd If I tell you that you're brought the only bit of sunshine I've had In my life for a great many yeara. We haven't apo- ken together mucb, you and I, but,' be took his arm away, "I abould like to help you If I can." He waited a moment and then asked, "Who's name was It you were afraid of reading In the paper Just now?" And Georgle told him. "Nicholas Boyd's." "The busband of the woman here?" he asked. "Yes.:" "How did you know him Georgle?" he asked, and suddenly aha found heraelf telling him pour ing out the thing which for ao long be bad been forced to keep to her aelf. "And does be care for you?" Bishop asked when sbe bad ended. "No." Georgle gars a little shaky laugh. "I'd glre anything In the world If be did," sbe added in a bro ken whisper. There was a little alienee. "And this woman, this Bernle Boyd," Bishop asked, "I don't think she lores him," Georgle said. "I don't know why, but somehnw I don't think, she does, or she would- be with him now, wouldn't she"" "A woman like that could not lore anyone but berself," Bishop said. He stood up and began roaming restlessly round tbe room In the way that always made Georgle tblnk of a Hon abut up In a cage. He came back to her at length, a tall gaunt figure In bis dressing-gown,- his hands thrust Into tbe pockets, "Is your mind set at rest now?' he asked. . "You nioan because It wasn't his namo In the paper?" "Yes." 1 Georgle sighed tragically. "If It bad been I think I sfiould hare died." "People do not die so easily," he answered. Impulsively1 aba stretched a hand to him, laying It on bis arm. "I never knew you could be so kind," she aald, "Kind!" be laughed rather grim ly. "I suppose everyone Is kind to one person once In a lifetime," he answered, and then, "You won't cry any more It I leave you?" "I'll try not to." "Goodnight then." Georgle stood up. "I need not ask you not to tell Evelyn," ahe said timidly, i . , "No," he said. "I do not betray eonnaecces. He went away without another word or look at her, and Georgle went on witn bor undressing. J"HB following morning Georgle - . ,u, a.uuiU lO BOB Bernle Boyd making a picture. Evelyn had asked tor and re ceived the Invitation, and she was inordinately proud of tbe fact. "MIm Boyd does not as a rule al low strangers to see her," so she told Qeorgle. "But In my case aha baa made an exception, so you must Behave and keep very quiet ao as not to disturb anyone." Georgle thought she waa far more likely to keep quiet than her mother was; Evelyn loved talking and alp Ing her views. "Bishop Is coming with us," her mother said discontentedly. "I don't know why, but be pretends to be interested. Of course It's only pretence; nothing really Interesta him except making money." Georgle's Hps moved to say some thing, but she closed them again, realising that It would oevei do for her to attempt to defend her stepfather. They uroro down In Bishop's big new nolle. "How mucb did it cost?" Georgle asked In curiosity when she first saw It, and ahe gasped when her mother answered lightly "Oh, about ten thousand, I sup pose." It seemed an enormous sum, Georgle thought, surely enough to keep halt a dozen Nellys In break fast and other necessities for the rest of their livesl It was queer bow unevenly money was divided, some people bad so much they did not know what to do with It, and other people had nothing at all. She tried to remember what It waa in the Bible that Christ had told someone to sell for three hun dred pence and give to the poor, and she ffondered if Bishop had ever heard about It, and what be would ay were It suggested to him that he sell the big ear and help people like Nelly. But Bishop was very generous; out In America ahe had been told of some huge charitable organization which waa entirely financed from his pocket, so perhaps one could not very well complain about the Rolls. Bishop was very quiet as they drove out of London; be sat with his eyes closed, looking more tired and lined than usual, and now and then Georgle glanced at him pity ingly. . She wondered why' Evolyn al ways insisted that there was noth ing the matter with him! To her In eiperionced eyea he looked a very sick man. Queer that with all hla money he could not obtain tbe most desirable thing In the world, health. The most desirable thing after love that Is, for Georgle was still young and unsophisticated enough to be lieve that love came flrst, always. THUG studios were hot and das- sllngly lit, and full of men who all seemed very busy and Important, and In a great hurry. i Georgle was introduced to soveral of them, and they called bor "my dear" and one of them told her she had a film face, Bernle Boyd seemed to be the centre of attraction, and .held court ' like a queen, her face made up In a way which Georgle thought hide ous, but which Evelyn explained was necessary for a successful picture. Evelyn liked to think she knew all about the business In band. She ex plained various details to Georgle in an entirely Incorrect manner, and appeared deeply Interested. Well, what do you think of It?" Bishop aAed Georgle once. He was standing looking on with bored eyes. "Does It flro your ambition to be a star?" I don't think so," Georgia said. "1 wonder It men havo to make up like that too?' Somehow she oould not imagine Nicholas being drilled and ordered about, and made to do the same thing over and over again until It waa entirely to the director's satisfaction.. Presently she wandered off to a corner of tbe studio by herself where a pile of photographs which she knew wore called "stills" Iny In an untidy heap. Sbe turned them over curiously dozens of thorn were of Bernle Boyd Derate In all attitudes, registering delight, fear, sorrow. Yes; she certainly had a very beautiful face, Georgle was bound to admit, more beautiful per haps when assisted by the skill of a camera' man than when- lft un touched. ' Bishop spoke at her elbow again. "It's all right about your friend. the one who needs a Job. Miss Boyd Is willing to give her a trial." Oh, bow aweet of you," she said gratefully, but to her surprise Bishop frowned. "I dislike thst expression." he said rather curtly, and then, "Don't begin copying your mother, Georgle." "I'm sorry," she aald helplessly. and then he smiled. "I told you last night we were both In the wrong box," he snld. Bornle came up to them at that moment; she was smiling and an- parently very pleased with berself. She spoke to Georgle and asked It she were enjoying herself. les, thank you," Georgle said. and then, "Are you?" she asked. Bernle laughed. "Docs anyone en joy work, I wonder?" she said. She laid a very much whitened hand on Bishop's coat sleeve. 'So kind of you to come," aba murmured In quite a different tone f voice.
