Vacations on River Earl Cooper, famous racing driver, is spending the Fourth of July vacation at Califor nia on the Rogue. He was accom panied her from California by his wife, mother, and daughter. They plan to return to Medford July 4, Fined In Court Wesley Morrison and Dan Phelan appeared In Justice court following their arrest at public dance last week, and Morrison was fined 5 when entering a plea of guilty. Phelan 'also entered a "guilty rlea, but Justice of the Peace W. Harold Grey and Joe Myers, two well known boats men of Medford will be leaving this week for the nortthern city. They will take their families with them. No Men Wanted Enrollment for the CCC camps In the Medford dis trict has been completed, according to announcement Issued Saturday at the offices here. There are 1005 local foresters enrolled in the district, the report shows, with about 3150 men In southern Oregon camps. Accident Reported Glen L. Fab rick of 30 North Riverside, filed an accident report with the city police, concerning a collision at the corner of Main and North Central Friday. Mrs. H. T. Pankey of Central Point was driving the other car, which Fab- rick said he struck when It pulled from the curb.- Meet In Medford Judge and Mrs. J. A. Hunt Hendrlckson of Portland, their son Jack and Miss Eleanor Bright stopped In Medford Saturday en route to Crater Lake and visited Mr. and Mrs. Thomas V. Williams, They were joined here by Carroll Hendrlckson of Frederick, Maryland, who arrived on the Shasta. Judge Hendrlckson Is a district Judge in Portland and dean of the Northwest ern college of law In that city. Mrs. Hendrlckson la state president of the League of Women Voters. They heard a shot and turned to see Bau- com slumping to the ground and a youth standing over him with a pis tol In his hand. As the officer at tempted to grab one of the two men. Klumpf said, the gunman shot twice more at the officer's head. Then the gunman spied the Klumpf car, and turned as If to shoot in that direc tion, but Klumpf speeded up his ma chine and raced to the nearest tele phone at a nearby auto camp. Posses Soon Organize. He notified the sheriff's office here and state police that the two had fled northward In their car. Posses throughout this vicinity were hur riedly organized, and points along the highway north and south of here were warned to be on the alert for the car carrying the two fugitives. Later, a truck driver, whose name was not immediately learned, saw two men step from a car and send It speeding over an embankment, then saw one of them throw a pistol Into some underbrush. Already Informed that Baucom had been shot, the truck driver followed the two men at a distance, and when a posse drove up. he told them he believed the couple walking along the highway ahead of them were the men sought. The two were arrested and, police said. readily confessed. The slain officer Is survived by his widow, living at Medford. Authori ties of that city said she was hysteri cal when Informed of her husband's death. Four bullets fired with the des perate folly of reckless transient youth snuffed out of the life of State Policeman Burrell Mllo Baucom, on Sexton Mountain on the Pacific highway near Grants Pass Saturday afternoon, about 4:20 o'clock. The first of the four bullets struck Officer Baucom In the abdomen, knocking him to the ground; the sec ond shot struck him in the neck. Grappling with one of the slayers, Baucom lay on the ground. Seeing the plight of his pal, the other youth returned, and deliberately, according to the police, fired two bullets, into the head of the officer. The pair was arrested two hours later by State Policeman Raleigh Tay lor, stationed at Grants Pass, and rushed to the Josephine county Jail. Gain Confession Captain Lee M. Bown of the south ern Oregon division, and Sergeant James O'Brien went at once to Grants Pass, where last night they were said to be gaining a detailed statement from the two youths. Mrs. Baucom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fay Diamond of this city, was lu a highly nervous and hysterical state last night. She was at the home of Ralph Cowglll. July 1 (UP) The plea of IS Oregon counties for full payment of O. & O. land gran funds this year was presented ta Comptroller McCarl today, according to information received from Wash ington, D. O. The matter does not officially go before the comptroller before October, when the treasurer Is to prorate such funds, but McCarl agreed to listen to Guy Cordon, district attorney of Douglas county, and Judge Victor P.
