PIWfE EIGHT MEDFORD 1IATL TRIBUNE, MEDFOUD, OREGON, TUESDAY, JUNE 20, 1933. MAY BE FINANCED BY STATE F federal Roads Chief Objects ; to Toll Project Is Word No Delay in Preparations for Work Is Declaration SALEM, June 20. (AP) Oregon's five cowt highway bridges whono construction la projected under ied eral public works funds, may be ope rated free rather than aa toll-charge structures, State Highway Engineer R. H- Baldock said today. Advised of opposition by Director Mcuonsia, cniei 01 tne oureau public roada, to the Imposition of toll charges for the use of publlo high' ways and of the aympathy of the public worka administrator toward McDonald'a objectlona, the state high way commission has authorized the aubmlsaton of an alternate amortize tlon plan which would obligate the state to pay not more than 125,000 a' year toward retirement of the loan of approximately 3,800,000. The other $1,000,000 required for the pro' jecta would be a federal grant, which the state would not be obligated to repay. . WASHINOTON. June 30. (AP) M. bevers, attorney for the Oregon highway commission, said here today he had ' received "encouragement" from the federal publlo worka officials In connection with proposed construc tion of five bridges on the Oregon coast highway. Devere aald be expect bids for one of the bridges will be advertised with In two weeks, and that blda for three of the spans will be advertised with in 30 days. SALEM, June 20. (AP) There will be no delay In preparing designs for the proposed five new bridges to be constructed on the Oregon coast highway with funds obtained through the federal publlo worka bill, this waa announced here today by R. H. Bel dock, atate highway engineer, who declared that under lnatructlona from the state highway commlaalon two ahlfts of bridge engineers would be t work within the next few days. "The work will be ruahed to apeedy completion," Baldock said, "so that the designs can be submitted to the bureau of publlo roads on a definite schedule." He said the design for the first bridge will be completed In two weeks, tha second bridge in SO days, the third bridge in SO days and fourth and fifth bridges In 00 daya. "It would appear that this Is an exceptional opportunity for the atate of Oregon and one that should not be passed up." Baldockfc statement read. "It would mean a free gift of 1. 000,000 from the federal govern ment and the employment of a large number of Oregon cltlrene." POSTAL SERVICE SAVING PLANNED WASHINOTON, Jn JO. (DP) A three month economy program for the postal service estimated to save 00,600,000 was announced today by Postmaster Oeneral Irley. It haa the approval of President Roosevelt. The program, to be In effect from July 1, to September 30, requires all postal employees, exoept rural mall earners, to take a nine day furlough without pay during this period. Equipment maintenance allowance for rural, camera will be reduced from four cents to 1 ITS cents par mile per day for tha aatne period. "It la our confident hope," Parley aald, "that the raaulte of this action will materially contribute not only to Vie balancing of the budget, but also to the eoonomlo restoration of the ountry.". The cards read: "Soli citations for donations and advertis ing are respectfully referred to the Chamber of Commerce for endorsement." It Is the purpose of the Chamber of Commerce to curtail as much as possible 'fly ? night solicitors and this can only be accomplished by the full co-operatton of all the mer chants of the city," stated John Mof- fatt, chairman of the retail mer chants' committee,, this morning. It Is known that thousands of dol- lsrs annually are sent out of Med- ford. some of them on propositions which have very little merit and It is believed that thla sum can be saved by having alt requests referred to the Chamber of Commerce for endorse ment first. e- DOLLAR DAY FARE OVER JULY FOURTH IDAHOHOUSETOR With dollar day fares In effect over the Fourth of July for the first time, the Southern Pacific company today announced plans for extensive travel In connection with the nation al holiday this year. The low-fare proprmm, featuring oent-a-mjle transportation, will em brace the five-day period. June 30 to July 4. with return limit of July 11, according to A. 8. Rosenbaum, district freight and passenger agent j for the company here. All stations on the railroad's lines In the territory from San Francisco to Salt Lake City, and from Port land to El Paso are to be Included In the holiday offer, It was stated. Testimony of Sergeant Keith Am brose of the atate police, relative to the efforts of the authorities, over a week's period to apprehend Welter J. Jones, mayor of Rogue River, was ordered stricken from the record yes terday by Judge George F. Skip worth, and the jury instructed to disregard it In their deliberations. The court held that It was compe tent to show the arrest of Jonea but not the efforts expended. The defense also scored when the court held that? a declaration made by Henrietta. B. Martin, after the "Good Government Congress" had adjourned, was barred. Mrs. Oerald tne Krlng, a state witness, said she saw Mrs. Martin, -her parents, L. A Banks, a Mrs. Lindsay and another woman waiting, and heard the pres ident of the "congress" make ft statement. The state contends that Mrs. Mar tin, Banks and others remained up on the suggestion of Jones, and de layed their departure by the rear door, to enable the way to be cleared of ballot pouchea and perpetrators. The state has contended that the "congress" leaders knew of the bal lot robbery. Sergeant Ambrose testified that between March 17 and March 33, a search was made for Jones at his home In Rogue River, up Kane's creek, up Murphy gulch, and at the home of John Kostka In O rants Pass. Koatka was described by Ambrose as a "Grants Pass bootlegger." On the defense objection, the phrsse "Grant Pass bootlegger" was ordered strick en. Under cross-examination Sergeant Ambrose testified that he told Jones when arrested at 6:80 a. m. at his home on March 33. "to get up and dress or I'll do it for you." Jones then go up, the witness said. The defendant claimed he waa ill at the time the sergesnt said he call ed a doctor for Jones as soon as he i arrived in this city in custody. It waa also revealed during the ex amlnatlon of Sergeant Ambrose that after the slaying of Constable Pres cott state police traveled In fours In making the ballot theft arrests. An affidavit was filed during the period of Jones' absence that he was alck In Portland, During the exchange between At torney Enrlgho of the defense and Assistant Attorney General Moody, the state's attorney replied: "Yes. and we are going to look Into that affidavit." The state asked for a recess at 3:30 p. m. until this morning, and the same was granted by the court. BOISE. Idaho, June 30. (AP) T,ie house of the Idaho legislature late Monday passed a bill legalising 3.3 per cent beer within half an hour after the measure was Introduced In a special session. The bill provided simply that In- toxlcstlng liquor be defined as splr- uous, vinous, malt and fermented- li quors which contain more than 3.3 per cent of alcohol by weight."
