MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUTE, MEDFORD. OREGON, FRIDAY, MAY 19, 1933. FAGE SEVO - LESS SALEM, May IB (AP A prepon derant per centige of men commit ted to the state penitentiary are without high achool education, a sur vey by Mathew R. Thompson, prln ei pal-elect of Sweet Home union high school, disclosed. Records of 500 consecutive male commitments to the Oregon peniten tiary from January 1. 1932 to March 1933. were studied by Thompson !n connection with research work at Willamette university. The prisoners' declarations of years spent in school were used. Previous surveys have shown pris oners Inclined to over state rather than under state the years of school ing, said Thompson. Prom his study of educational and ase groups In relation to the total number and the classification of crimes committed, Thompson maJe the following observations: "The great mass of commitments comprised men with only a grade school education 68 per cent. "Generally speaking, the figures demonstrated that the more educa tion, the less crime. "No particular age or educational groups seem to lead In homicides. "The preponderance of crime , was committed against property. "Adolescents excepted, young men committed more violent crimes, pro portionately and In actual numbeis, than older men. 'There seems to be a 'dangerous age of men over 40 for sex crimes 88 per cent of sex crimes were In this group. "Many over 40 were convicted of 'liquor' crimes, some being quite old and evidently foreigners. "The higher the educational status the less violent the crime."
