Wilson, The Johnsons sent greetings to all their friends in the Rogue River val ley. Attend Banks Trial Mrs. Robert Grlmmett of Medford, Mrs. Sam L. Sandry of Rogue River and Mra. Ed win L. Severance of Jacksonville at tended the trial of L. A. Banka and wife, Edith R. Banks, charged with first degree murder, Monday. They were present when Mayor Jonea of Rogue River took the stand and were Interested In the testimony being given, Mrs. Sandry "being a resident of that community and Mrs. Grlm mett a former resident. K. Cass of Grants Pass telephoned police in Med ford thla morning that his gray tweed overcoat was stolen by a hitch hlkor from a Grants Pass restaurant last night. (9 Pictures Tonight Horace L. Brom ley will show moving pictures of the Future Craftsmen at work on the Turnbow residence, in a group of films at the Senior high school this evening. The pictures are being pre sented at 8 o clock under tne aus pices of the Future Craftsmen. This Is the first time the films have been shown, and all members of the club as well as their friends and the gen eral public are Invited to attend. There will be no charge. Other films of local interes.t will also be presented by Mr. Bromley. County Commissioners Bmmett Nealon and Ralph Billings yesterday refused the application of the com munist 'party for the use of the audi torium of the county courthouse for the formation of a Jackson county communist party, Saturday night. In refusing the application, the commissioners declared that since Fred Walker, who was to be the chief speaker, was a paid organizer of the communists, and since the auditorium of the courthouse was reserved for the conduct of meetings of a con structive sort, that the application must be refused. Val Waer of Table Rock made the application, in the Interests of the communist party. The commissioners also ordered the payment of $3600 on the purchase contract of the county experimental orchard, which was due some time ago. The orchard was purchased two years ago, and is conducted in the Interests of experimental work of in terest to local growers. Would Delay Bill WASHINGTON. May 16. (AP) From a conference of republican sen ators today. Senator McNary, party leader, took to the democratic lead ers a proposal to delay action on the Glass bank bill until the pending Im peachment trial of Judge Harold Louderback is ended. Harvard President James Bryant Conant, 40, Sheldon Emery professor of organic chem istry, was chosen by the university corporation as president of Har vard to succeed A.Lawrence Lowell, resigned. He Is one of the youngest men ever to head the university. Goad Firm to Trade With" OFFICE SPACE FOR Fl Use of Second Floor Old City Hall Provided:-Unemploy-ed Groups Asks Continu ance of Financial Aid With announcement made to the city council at ita regular session last night that the base concentration camp for the civic conservation corps would be located In Medford. with four thousand men in this district by early summer, the body voted to al low the organization use of the sec ond floor of the old city hall at the corner of Front and Sixth atreeta. for the length of time the force will be in Medford. W. S. Bolger, presi dent of the chamber of commerce requested use of the hall for the pro ject. Although the Salvation army had moved a part of Its supplies Into the rooms, arrangements were to be made to find other quarters for the church group, in order that equipment might be moved In today by the army men Unemployed Ask Fund . R. J. Knutson appeared before the council in behalf of the Medford Un- employed association and the Med ford Association of the unemployed, requesting that the financial aid pre viously furnished by the city, be continued. Upon recommendation of the finance committee, the council- men voted to pay 25 for the last half of the month of May, and 950 for the month of June, after which no further aid could be given. The funds have been used for hir ing Harry Moore as secretary, and the council recommended that the un employed groups, which are well or ganized by this time, try to carry on without a paid assistant. Report on Gardens Mr. Knutson also gave a report of the city gardens which are located near the Sunrise service station, near the Marc'Jarmln residence, near the Hamilton Patton residence and near the Dr. F. G. Bunch residence. The matter of amending the milk ordinance to comply with the federal regulations was accepted, upon rec ommendation of the health commit tee. Representatives of the Four Square Gospel church were given permis sion to construct a tent for meet- lngs, providing the grounds were cleared afterward. Councilman C. C. Darby was appointed responsible for seeing that the property was cleared. Street Plan Filed Frank Rogers, city building Inspec tor, presented the city superinten dent's report concerning the widen ing of East Main street, and the mat ter was ordered filed. No action was taken upon the chamber of commerce report concern ing the sewage disposal situation, and the report made by Hamilton Pat ton. Ben E. Harder and A. W. Pipes. All members of the council were present, with W. M. Clemenson pre siding In the absence of Mayor E. M- Wilson. EAGLE PT PASSES Mrs. Luclnda Pool, 60, resident of the North West Eagle Point district for the past three years, died at her home Tuesday from heart trouble. She waa a native of Mercer county, 111., and the wife of Byram E. Pool. She leaves besides her husband five brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held at the grae In the Central Point cemetery Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. J. M. Johnson will deliver the service with the Perl Funeral parlor in charge of arrangements. Banks here today as a series of character witnesses took the stand. Each testified that Banks, ex-Medford publisher, had a poor reputation for "truth and . veracity and as a law-abiding clttEeii." Each also testified that George J. Prcscott, Medford constable, had a good repu tation as a "mild mannered man, not quarrelsome." M Kltrlck On Stand Wesley McKltrick. of Medford. on of the two other rebuttal witnesses, took the stand and denied having heard Prcscott threaten the life of Banks. McKltrick said he has been In Jail on the ballot theft indict ments. He denied being a "sort of assistant Jailor," and said he la the Jail cook. Virgil Edington. Rogue River mall carrier and school bus driver, anoth er of several people indicted, on the ballot theft counts, took the stand. He said he is out on bonds and testi fied that Banks had asked him to nrtange for witnesses who would say that Prcscott had threatened Bnnks' ll.'e. This testimony was ordered stricken from the records, however, as not being competent rebuttal testimony. say Bunks Poor Citizen Character witnesses Included Mrs. Rase Guthrie Schleffelin. Medford club woman; W. O. Webster, Medford confectioner; Alfred 0. Burch, ex member of the state board of higher education; Marie M. D'Albinl, Med ford clubwoman; O. O. Alenderfer, Gates, another ex-mayor, ex-mayor of Medford; and C. E. All said Banks' reputation was bad and that Constable Prescott had a good reputation and was not quar relsome. Buroh said he had been a subscriber to Banks' paper, the Medford Daily News, "until it became too scurrilous to read." Attorneys In Tiff Ralph Moody, chief prosecutor, and Frank Lonergan, chief of the defense, amused the courtroom when, follow ing a heated debate across the table, Lonergan shouted, "Mr. Moody, don't shake your fist at me because I don't like It.'" Judge Q. F. Sklpworth Interposed the suggestion that the "fist shaking was a characteristic gesture of Moody's, while Moody replied that "I didn't shake my flat at Mr. Lonergan because I wouldn't dare."
