tPSBSC TEST"1-- POPPY WEEK OPEN BEFORE MEMORIAL (Contributed) fie American Legion Auxiliary will observe Poppy Week this year the week preceding Memorial day. The American Legion poppy waa worn In America In honor of the war dead even before th close of the war. In 1010 scattered poppy sales were held by the American Legion and the following year, In national con ventlon at Cleveland, Ohio, the Le gion odopted the poppy as It memo rial flower. When the Auxiliary waa organized In Kansas City In 1021, one of ltj first acta waa the adoption of the poppy as the memorial flower. Tie nation-wide sale of poppies to ba worn on Memorial day was begun by the Llglon and Auxiliary In 1021. At first silk popples made In France by French widows and or h pan were used, but soon the manufacture of paper popples by American disabled veterans waa begun. The paper poppy made by American disabled In gov ernment hospitals and poppy work shops became the standard American Legion and Auxiliary flower. By 1924 It waa seen that the poppy program lent Itself more naturally to Che work of women than of men and the American Legion gave to the Auxiliary complete charge of the na tional program. This was a heavy responsibility. The poppy was sacred to the war dead and needed to be guarded against soiling commercial ism A large percentage of the wel fare and relief funds of the two or ganizations came from the poppy sale, Seldom has auch a gtgantlo enter prise been placed solely In the hands of women. How well the Auxiliary measured up to the responsibility placed In Its bands Is shown by the development In the sale of the red paper flower. AH contributions received from the sale are used for relief work among the disabled veterans and their fami lies and the needy families of Med ford. 4 IS REALTY AGENT William I. Vawter, one of Med ford's tistlva eons, who has great faith In the future of the Rogue River valley, because he knows It so well, has en tered the real estate and Insurance business Jn room 16, Jackson County bank building, he announced yester day. The numerous relief measures now being passed, he believes, will mean restoration of the farming In dustry and Increased sales of prop erty and, in anticipation of this rise rn the property market, he has en tered the real estate business. Mr. Vawter was associated with the Jackson. County bank here for 16 years and developed the Olon Oak subdivision, one of Med ford's most beautiful residential sections, a few years ago. In his present business he will specialize In .home selling, suburban homes, acreage, farms, rent als, property management, Invest ments and Insurance.
