BEAUTIES FILMED FOR TRAVELOGUE THe beauties of southern Oregon, which hu all those girts of nature "California tries to claim" will be produced In motion pictures, which will carry the story across the na tion Is the announcement made here today by Bruce Merman and H. O. OlObbs, who arrived last night from Hollywood to start work on the picture. Representing, on this mission, tfte Shasta-Caeca.de Wonderland associa tion, of which Jackson county le a member, the men will photograph or chards, Crater Lake, the gem of the Paclflo northwest, as well as of the mld-Paclflo empire; historic Jackson ville, and fishing streams of south ern Oregon. During their present stay their time will probably be devoted to the or chards. Crater Lake and Jacksonville, they stated this morning. The south em Oregon views, with those of other counties In Oregon and California, Included in the Shasta Cascade Won derland, will be shown In a film to be known as the Shasta Cascade Wonderland travelogue, which will be released to all cities In the manner of leading motion picture films. The travelogue will have Its pre mier showing In Radio City, N. Y., and Hollywood, according to present plans. It will be ready for showing In magna-color by the middle of July, If weather conditions are normal. Starting with Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta In California, toe film will move northward to Crater Lake. In cluding all the recratlonal advan tages offered by this region of the Pacific coast. The film will be re leased for a minimum period of three years, giving opportunity for Its showing throughout the nation. It will Include 100 pictures in all. Gold panning and golfing will be Included, and H. Chandler Egan will probably be starred In a short on the Rogue Valley course. While here Messrs. Merman and Glbbs are working with C. E. Dates, director for Jackson county In the Wonderland association. They will return later to get tie fishing scenes. Refusing to complain about the weather this morning, when show ers dampened their photography ex pectations, Mr. Merman declared: "We prefer rain to earthquakes any day. Your weather Is gTand." The publicity committee of the Wonderland association will meet In Medford Monday for luncheon to visit the territory being photographed by the Hollywood mov.on picture men. Llndsey of Lozler lane underwent a major op eration this morning at the Sacred Heart hospital and was getting along' satisfactorily this afternon, his friends were glad to learn. Steele, "Crater Lake's grand old man," according to report from the Sacred Heart hospital, where he Is a very sick man. Mr. Steele un derwent a major operation at the hospital a few days ago. Nor were they referred to any questioning as the Prescott pictures were discussed simply as photographs taken on the morning of March 16. A picture of a rifle, revolver and cartridge belt taken at the Banks home following the shooting was not admitted in evidence when defense counsel objected on the grounds they had not yet been Identified in any way as being connected with the case. EUGENE, Ore., May 4. (AP) The opening arguments concluded, the state prepared today to put Its wit nesses on in rapid succession in the circuit court trial here of Llewellyn A. Banks, former Medford editor, and his wife, Edith R. Banks, for first degree murder. Two witnesses were called before yesterday's half-day session was con cluded. Most of the session, short ened because of the sudden death Tuesday of William S. Levens, spe cial prosecuting attorney, was devot ed to arguments. Says He's Fanatical The state declared-that Bnaks Is a fanatical rogue." who shot and killed George Prescott, Medford con stable, in cold blood when he at geant James O'Brien of the state po lice, with the warrant. Fleming, Jacksonville orchard- lst, in the Banks home as a visitor, at the time of the murder; Thomas Williams, Medford youth, who Mrs. Banks gave a note to deliver to the state police, as he walked by the murder spot: Tommy Curran, a spec tator at the Banks home, Immediately following the tragedy; Attorney E. E. Kelly, Janet Clements Ouches, secre tary to Banks, who left 'the Banks home 16 minutes before the slaying, after taking dictation from Banks. Mrs. Guches departed as Fleming en tered the Banks home. Her husband. Chester Guches, is also called as a witness for the state. Clatous McCredie. Medford chief of police, close personal friend of the slain officer, among the first to ar rive at the murder spot; Dr. O I. Drummond, county physician and Dr. B. C. Wilson, former county physic tan, who conducted an autopsy over the murdered officer; county Clerk George R. Carter, who will testify to legal documents and warrants In the case and Earl Bryant of Jacksonville, who entered a plea of guilty in the ballot theft case, and whose home last winter was set fire, while his family slept. Nick Kayl, the home owner, confessed he planned to burn down the house to collect the insur ance. Kayl is now serving five years In state prison. Chief Jailer Fred Kelly, in close touch with Banks since his incarcera tion. County Engineer Paul B. Ryn- ning, Attorney Gus Newbury; W. H. Conger, former coroner, Captain Lee M. Bown, who arrested Banks, and escorted him to the Josephine county Jail, and Sergeant Jamej O'Brien, of the state police, who accompanied Constable Prescott to the porch of the home, where the murder occurred. It Is reported that the state has other witnesses in reserve. It will call In rebuttal if the defense evidence warrants. Van Wegen, asserted chauffeur of Mrs. Martin, and her companion on the buggy-whipping of Editor Leonard N. Hall of the Jacksonville Miner; Amos C. Walker of Central Point, a deputy sheriff the first two months of the year; P. M. Morrison of the Ashland district, and friend of Tom Brecheen, held In the county jail for ballot theft, due to Inability to raise 97500 bonds; A. J. Cox, John Wheeler, Effle Jones, May Murray and May Powell. - Kermit Doak and William A. Owings, one mile up Trail creek from Trail. Owlnss has been in Los Angeles since Febraury, 1032, and returned here April 30, after neighbors had written to him telling him that the door of hie house was open. Inves tigation showed that about (300 worth of supplies, guns, foodstuffs and furniture were missing. Doak and Helms have admitted ihe robbery, state police said this after noon, and most of the goods have been recovered. It was found at the home of Dick Landers, brother-in-law of Helms, who lives on Elk creek. Landers has not been arrested, police said, but Is under Investigation. The goods were found cached in the woods back of Landers' house. Included in the property stolen were two rifles, 300 pounds of flour, 150 pounds of sugar, a Victrola, blan kets, beans and a full set of carpen ter tools. All the warrants have been protested and are drawing 8 per cent Interest. No tax levy woe made on the gen eral rood fund for this year, which means there will be no money avail able to retire the warrants against the road fund except that money re ceived from the state for auto li censes and taxes. The hlgi warrant Indebtedness has been caused by delinquencies In tax payments, the warrants having been Issued to - carry on county business when there was no money available. Shangle identified pictures of the Banks residence, the door through which the bullet passed, the interior of the house and other routine pho tographs which were submitted as evi dence. A shudder swept through the press tempted to serve a warrant on him March 16 at his home. The defense answered that the former editor was 'a cornered creature," who, over wrought by county officials who had persecuted him, slew the constable as a defensive move to protect his home. The trial, now in its fourth day, was moved here from Medford on a change of venue. Defense attorneys, reviewing Banks' life, disclosed that he had made and lost several fortunes. Born in Ohio and raised on a fruit farm, he en tered the fruit distributing business. There he successfully built up a for tune, but lost it In the panic of 1007. He went to Riverside, Cal., where he acquired possession of a citrus ranch of 1000 acres. The defense said that Banks fought with an association that purchased from producers at what he believed was an unfair price. Center of Quarrels He came to Oregon in 1921 after having loaned a Rogue valley orchard -1st 926.000, In Jackson county he paid 200,000 for 650 acres of orchard lands. Banks quarreled with a pack ers' association for similar reasons he had found in the south, the defense declared, and this was the beginning oi a series or disputes that spread when Banks acquired control of a Medford daily newspaper and reached its climax in recent months in a county-wide storm. In thost last months Banks demanded the whole sale resignation of county officers ana organized the "Good Govern ment Congress" to work toward that goal. Ballots Stolen ..' On the eve of a recount to de termine the legality of the election of Sheriff Schermerhorn, whom Banks had supported, 10,000 ballots were stolen from the county court house. Bankst was one of mote than a score Indicted in this connection, and it was when Prescott attempteo to serve the resulting warrant that he met ihls depth.
