test will be held starting April 29
and ending on the evening of Mat
20, when southern Jackson county's
most popular girl will be announced
and coronated at the official eplning
of Twin Plunges, Ashland's popular
swimming and dancing establishment.
Seven girls will be candidates for
the honor, each being sponsored by
an organization.
On May 19 and 20 a moonlight re
vue will be given at the Ltthla the
taer with the seven contestants tak
ing part and also on May 20 a water
carnival will be held at Twin Plunges
featuring swimming and diving con
testa and a water polo game.
Following are the candidates and
their sponsors: Miss Esther Carter,
Bellvlew Orange, Miss Nancy Gill,
Elks' club; Miss Phyllis Sparr, Ro
tary club; Sylvia Logan, Talent
Orange; Miss Jean Swlgart, normal
school. As yet unnamed are candi

SEATTLE, Wash.. April 28. (AP)
Fifteen demonstrators were under ar
rest today on open charges, while
Sheriff Claude O. Bannlck and eight
of his deputies nursed broken bones
and severe cults and bruises the
outgrowth of a riot during an evic
tion of a family.
In a battle In which stones, Iron
pipes, baseball bats and even razors
were used by members of a crowd of
between 200 and 300 who were pro
testing yesterday afternoon the re
moval of Prank Franzen from His
home, the officers carried out the
eviction successfully.
The eviction was ordered by Su
perior Judge John A. Prater on Mon
day, but had been delayed two days.
Sheriff Bannlck said, until another
home could be found for the family.
Pranzen had paid 42900 on the 14600
purchase price of the home, but had
not made any payments the past
year.

Andrew W. Mellon, former ambassa
dor to Great Britain and former sec
retary of the treasury, today denied
charges made In the senate that he
had actively Interested himself in
trying to defeat President Roosevelt's
pending lnfltaion legislation.
Mr. Mellon, who returned to his ,
home In Washington today, said he
did not want to be understood as en
dorsing currency Inflation, proposed
stiver legislation, proposals to Issue
flat money or reduce the gold con
tent qf the dollar.
Re said there were parts of the
administration program such as the
gold embargo and continuance of the
government's open market policy
which were Justifiable and he hoped
would have a beneficial effect.
