TO GOVERNMENT
ROSEBURO, Oregon, April 38.
(AP) Transfer of the Oregon state
soldiers home to the federal govern
ment has been authorized for May 8,
according to word received this mor
ning by Colonel E. P. Tandy, man
ager of the Northwest National Sold'
lers Home here. The present Oregon
home Is to be made a part of the
veterans administration facility here.
Authority for the transfer was given
by the state legislature two yeara ago
and deeds were signed by the state
board of control and have been
placed In the hands of the veterans
administration, awaiting the time for
the Inclusion of the property Into the
national home for the .Paclflo north
west area.
Examination of the 100 men now
being cared for in the state 'home
was started this morning by Dr.
James G. Donnelly, chief medical of
ficer of the . national home here.
Population of the state home has de
creased quite rapidly since the sign
ing of the economy bill, as many of
the veterans lacked qualifications for
admission to the national home and
accepted discharges. There are about
70 world war veterans now at the
state home and It Is expected that
nearly one-half of this number will
be unable to secure admission to the
national home, due to the restric
tions Imposed by the national econ
omy act. It is anticipated that all
civil and Spanish war veterans now
at the state home will be accepted In
the federal Institution.
The state home, established here
by an act of the legislature In 1893,
has In recent years cost the state of
Oregon, approximately .945,000 an
nually. Since 1009 the federal gov
ernment has contributed $10 month
ly to the state at Oregon for the sup
port of veterans in the home.
