Another hog calling contest U In order, to bring out the real lung power of the rural areas, The Sat urday efforts were noble, praise worthy, and of high excellence, but It Is known that the expert hog callers either remained at home or kept still. It would be a treat to bear Aabury Beall and his boy, Col. Tou Voile, Hermy Offenbacher of the Applegate, 0. Wig Aahpole, Mike Hanley, Charles Terrell, Dewey Bill, and others In open competition, it, would not be necessary for them to come to town. The Judges would assemble In the stand, and the com petitors go Into their backyards and start yolllng. Then the judges could proclaim the winner, making due allowance for volume, distance, and Interference from the wind. For ln atance, Michael Hanley on Lake Ork. and 30 miles away, could not deafen the Judges as completely as Aabury Beall, on his lane, a stone's throw, or five miles away. Mr. Dewey Hill at Prospect, would be placed at par, with his rivals though 48 miles away, northeasterly. His hog call would have the advantage of coming down hill all the way. The above are the cream of the hog callers. This does not mean that any hog caller Is aklm-mllk. : "The Bohemia club met at the home of Mrs. Rhea Brown Thursday, The attendance was not so good" (Paisley Items.) Frank and candid, letting the chips fall where they will, THE FATAL PANCAKE (Dcntnl Journal) There Is no anesthetic more potent than the pancake. After eating a stack of pancakes, a person Is Indif ferent to almost anything. The pancake Is not taken In the arm, hypodermlcally, nor is It Inhaled like ether, but It Is a drug with a ahtfpe and kick all It own. It Is In disc form about the ale and thick ness of a graph op hone record. The patient or pancake-ee may ad mints- 1 ter the dose himself altho he should be watched and dragged off before j he completely suffocates himself. The . process la more pleasant If the pan- j cake Is laved In maple or Imitation maple molasses. As the patient eats ; the pancakes he develops a frenzy1 and will eat himself to death unleas a whl&tle la blown or the supply Is arbitrarily shut off. In ten minutes the patient will begin to yawn, in a halt hour he will be completely bored with life, and In forty minutes he will fall into a stupor and you may sell him Ufa Insurance, take his pofketbook, or get his name on the dotted line for a building lot In ewamp. A man under the Influence of pancakes will resist nothing. He . has no interest In Ufo except bis sweet dreams. Gold Mining Revives TPHE revival of local interest in mining is all to the good. The more interest shown, the more work will be done. And the more work the more mineral wealth this section of Oregon will produce. ' Gold is the only commodity in the world, that the depression hasn't deflated. Gold in fact today, is worth more, that is will buy more, than ever before in the history of this genera tion. , , . . That there is gold in these yere hills, everyone knows. Mil lions have been taken out in the past. While the rich surface yields have probably been exhausted, there is no reason to doubt that modern mining methods will make millions more available. In this gold revival two things should be avoided. Wildcat schemes and exaggerated reports on one hand. Public indiffer ence to conservative investment and development on the other. Public indifference has been pretty well eliminated. Now with the formation of a mining committee under the leadership of experienced mining men who are interested in constructive development rather than get-rich-quick promotion, our local industry as well as other mineral development work, should be put upon a permanent, business-like basis. Such a movement we repeat resources of Southern Oregon asset, which should be developed, of this community, from year to The Power of THE sensational progress made by President Roosevelt in less t.bnn fnnr wftftlffl. nhnwn nlfiflrlv t.hft Hfltfirminino fnrp.n in this democracy of publio opinion. That there is Btrong opposition in the congress to the "new deal" is certain. This was even shown when the president fired his first bombshell via his economy program. Stronger opposition developed against the administration's railroad plan, and the strongest program. ' Nevertheless Roosevelt remains in the pilot house,' with one hand on the whistle cord and ahead" lever. i :" WHY J Simply because he has publio opinion behind him. The experience that befell our own Senator Steiwer is typical. QnnlA CAiinn- aha nl .1i a air tit ennalr anainat til (1 uouaiu! nmnvi uD w. administration's eoonomy program. From the standpoint of , noUtleg. and normal executive dictatorship, he stood on solid ground. But 24 hours after his anti-Roosevelt speech, Oregon's junior senator decided that Long Beaoh earthquake had extended to Oregon. It is rumored that there were enough protest tele grams, fired from Portland alone, to justify extra dividends by the Western Union and Postal. Other recalcitrants had a similar experience. President Roosevelt has the people of this oountry behind him. He knows it. That is why he is making hay whije the sun shines. NOW members of the congress know it. JUST as long as this situation lasts and it promises to last for some time our new president will continue to break all records for rapid, decisive executive accomplishment. Mem bers of the opposition in both senate and house instead of trying to trip him up, will run over each other, in an effort to grab his coat tails, It is colled dictatorship, but it isn't really. It is merely a demonstration of what an intelligent and aggressive leader of a doraooraoy ean do, when he has the people of his country bohind him. ' Don't Be a Rip Van. Winkle IF SOME Oregon Rip Van Winkle had gone to sleep ten years ago, and awakened today, what a shook he would get. He would find in this former paradise of aridity, beer gar dens about to bloom. He would find horse and dog racing legalized, and betting on them sanctioned. He would find a former Eepublican state rabidly demo cratic, and a Roosevelt in the White House, who had never voted the Republican ticket. He would find a gold panning school on the S. P. right of way, a hog calling oontest as commissary working overtime the post office. He would find a score of charges ranging from horsewhipping, through robbery to first degree murder. He would find a valley at the end of March with snow still on the foothills and not a pear tree in bloom. Queryi. Would he ask for a hot bath and a ohange of under wear, or ask to go back to sleep t Boing a Rip Van Winkle, he would probably be too dumb to sense the worm had turned, and after his long sleep, he had awakened to a new dawn. True to his slumbering nature, he would undoubtedly go back to bed. As a flrBt aid disinfectant mer- curochrome was applied. The pa tient dressed the wound herself every day. While showing It to her friend she drop ped a bit of cot ton on the floor, picked It up, and placed It over the raw surface and applied the ban dage. Her friend remonstr ated that this was unsafe. The patient thought not, as the mercurochrome Is so powerful that It destroys any germs there might be on the cotton. Is that so? In this case it would seem at least questionable, for a few days later the patient was seriously 111 with Infection of the leg. Mercurochrome Is all right as first aid disinfectant. Probably it la efficient as tincture of lodln for the purpose. It has one advantage over lodln as a first aid remedy for use In the home, namely, that It doesn't bite or smart so much on large wound or raw surface. The bite or smart of lodln Is only mo mentary, however. Any one who has used plain tincture of lodln or lodln and glycerin half and half as an ap plication to a canker sore in the mouth (for which It Is an excellent remedy) knows it bites for a moment and then seems to leave the canker less sensitive. On the other hand, mercurochrome has one or two dis advantages which In my opinion, ren der it less satisfactory than lodln. It makes a conspicuous red stain on everything, and It costs too much. The breach of surgical technic com mitted by the woman who picked the bit of cotton off the floor and placed It in contact with the raw surface was a glaring one, but most laymen commit Just as grave errors when dealing with minor wounds, even tho they are meticulous about using anti septics. The layman has a childlike faith In antlseptlo or germicidal agents which Is not shared by the physician, surgeon or even the well-trained nurse. Perhaps the most fatal error of the layman who attempts to treat his own or another's wound Is the touching of the raw surface with finger or with any, object that Is not sterile. This common breach of surgical tech nic doubtless accounts for many more cases of septicemia, blood poisoning, septic Infection than are caused by such obvious errors as the correspond ent describes. - A fundamental principle which the wiseacre layman seldom comprehends Is that with proper care we can keep germs out of a wound, but If they once get Into the. wound we haven't a germicide that will kill the germs without damaging the tissue cells and retarding or preventing the natu ral heating process. It Is upon that principle that the practice of first aid wound disin fection is based. One application of lodln (or mercurochrome) Immedi ately may destroy any germs that are Implanted by the Implement that made the wound. But after that Im mediate disinfection, It Is better to avoid further germicidal or antiseptic medicaments and simply strive to protect the wound from further Infec tion while healing Is In process. Here is where real skill and knowledge comes In. Aseptic care of any wound, minor or major, assures the quickest healing and the least scar, but asep tic technic Is a closed book to the wiseacre layman with his pet anti septics.
